Think the Read & Run got most of it, but...

    Logs are attached.

    Neither SuperAntiSpyware nor MalwareBytes would run for me, so no logs from them. I had to run combofix twice. The first time, something tried to run and the computer crashed (yep, blue screen of death). After that everything seems to be running fine, but I thought I'd post up the logs in case there is something still amiss.

    Thanks so much for your help.

    Two of your logs are indicating a possible MBR infection, though I am not seeing any traces of it. However, the first thing you need to do is to put ComboFix directly on your desktop as instructed, not here:
    Running from: j:\windows xp cleaning\ComboFix.exe --> slide it out of the folder onto your desktop, please.

    Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

    You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    Then boot back into normal mode.

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\Grisihaf.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\Rzuyoxazexow.bin

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Local Settings\Application Data\bndhfux

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    So sorry about combofix being in the wrong place. Thought I'd moved it to the desktop, but it was just a shortcut. /doh

    I was unable to boot to the Recovery Console, getting a blue screen for my efforts instead.

    I did run the combofix (from the correct place this time) and MG

    Logs are attached.

    Again, thank you so much!

    Were you trying to boot into the recovery console from the disc or from choosing the RC from your boot up options? At this point, it appears as though the report of an MBR infection is a false positive.

    Do you know what this is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\Local Settings\Application Data\bndhfux --> if not, delete it.

    What malware issues are you having?

    Were you trying to boot into the recovery console from the disc or from choosing the RC from your boot up options?

    I selected it from from the boot up screen; I can't seem to locate my discs. :-o

    Do you know what this is. . .if not, delete it.

    Deleted

    What malware issues are you having?

    I had one of those fake antivirus programs sneak past my Comodo somehow and take up residence on my computer. The fauxAV seems to be gone, but my computer is now locking up - sometimes right away, other times I can work for a couple of hours before everything just freezes. I can move the mouse around but no amount of clicking or typing has any effect. Usually it happens when I am on the internet, but it also happened when I was copying a CD into iTunes. When it happens, I usually just shut the computer down using the power button. I waited to reply in order to see if deleting the file you mentioned in the last thread might remedy this problem, but I just had it happen again.

    I had assumed this glitch is related to the malware, but is it possible that it is a hardware/software/driver update issue that just coincedentally started at the same time as the malware invasion?

    Then lets try a different approach.

    GMER's MBR.exe

    • Double click on the MBR.exe file to run it.
    • A log will be produced & saved to the desktop, called MBR.log.
    • Rename this log. Attach this log to your next message.

    Then run the below instructions.
    Click Start > Run and copy & paste the following text in the code box into the Run box and then click OK. You must copy and paste or type in this exactly. The quotes must be exactly as shown and there is a space before the -f
    Code:

         "%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

    Now double click on the mbr.exe file and attach the new mbr.log

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * MBR logs.
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    redoakflower Private E-2

    . . .attach the below logs:

    * MBR logs.
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I only attached the one mbr.log since they all three looked exactly the same
    (I would assume that the words "successfully" and the "ok" at the end mean good news...but then we all know what happens when folks who don't know what they are doing assume things...)

    Also, my computer has been very stable today (so far no lock ups) *knocks on wood*

    Your logs are clean. We just need to remove a dead service, so please:
    Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:
    Save this as fix.bat on your desktop.
    Choose to save as all files.
    Doubleclick fix.bat and let the program run.
    A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.

    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    I am still having a problem with my computer locking up.
    I'm almost certain it isn't a malware problem since everything you told me to run seemed to check out clean, but I'm not sure where to seek further help. My boot-up diagnostic says my hardware is fine; I've run with the machine open to be sure the graphics card is behaving; I've shut down all but three start up process in msconfig; and I've updated my drivers and windows (or tried to ... Windows and Internet Explorer don't seem to like me). I feel like I'm hunting moths in the dark with a shotgun!
    I think it might be a software problem, but I don't know for certain. Should I post in the software forums (with a link back to this thread, maybe) or should we continue to troubleshoot here?
    I hate to bother you with a software (or hardware?) problem when there are plenty of malicious programs keeping y'all busy as bees over here.
