Thinking about cashing out in Cali and getting out while the getting is good. Or just aquiring the land for now. Getting sick of all the crap going on out here and tired of being 15ft away from people no matter where I go.

    Anyone else ever do this?

Sounds like a wonderful decision, but make sure you think it out, not just purchase it on an impulse. Would be a total different lifestyle.

    Just my $.02

20-35 acres !!thats like?? the size of my village, that would be awsome, the only way of affording that much land in the UK is by winning the lotto,I dream about it all the time,my own private supercross track Ahhhhh! :)

I guess it's somewhat different but I uprooted, sold everything except 12 small boxes of personal stuff to come out to Oregon, Randy. Best decision I made for many years, and not because I just married the most amazing guy (hehe) but up here the land is beautiful, spacious and the people are just fantastic. I've done the Californian thing too...head north I say buddy...and as you pass through Oregon on the way to Montana, don't forget to drop in for a jamming session and some English cooking :D

Similar here in NY. Taxes are sky high and getting higher. Our county has either the, or close to, the highest gas tax around, 65 cents, making us often 65 cents higher then other places. I would like a better climate, but the hurricanes make me wonder. Not because of the news recently, I always wondered. Louisiana is a good example, no money spent to fix the levy, 200,000 poor african americans stranded imho because they were put on the system and told they had no chance. I think NY is the same way. Tax and spend, but not on attempting to empower people. My problem is all my family and friends are here. Ive considered the Carolinas a few times and my wife is willing to go, I am just not so sure. Worst we get here is a rare snow or ice storm ever 5-10 years that makes moving around difficult for a couple days, the rest is normal weather stuff. Maybe Pennsylvania, closeby, similar weather, no hurricanes, better tax rates, no helmet law :) Florida just seems to crowsed for me and although I like nice weather 360 days a year of sun seems too much for me. I like green stuff, you know plants, trees, grass ;)

I'd love to move out west... I hate where I live in MD... Only been here about a year... Only thing that's keeping me from leaving is living close to my sister and her family... They're not that pleased with the area either and will probably move within the next 5 years...

I hear ya Tim. I could go on for days about all the BS that goes on here. Movie star for a govenor, all sorts of rediculous road/vehicle taxes that don't go towards fixing the damn roads, etc.

I think we are gonna fly out soon and look at some land. Would be a good investment even if we don't put a house on it for a while. I think the most attractive part of it is being able to pay off everything and just work at something I like to do instead of the crazy dayjob thing I have at the moment. I can picture a 5,000 sq ft shop on that property with some amazing tools and days on end to work with them ;).

I believe it gets very cold in Montana. It even has something called "snow"?
I hate the cold. That is why I live in Cairns. Bazza

Go for it, my man. I retired in Houston from OB-Gyn 3 years ago and we moved to our house on an acre of mountainside in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It was heaven, compared to the hustle and bustle of Houston. Snow movement got a bit dicey, but no big deal.

I loved the golf and the skiing, the altitude, etc. 5 miles to Wal-Mart and the nearest mall was 90 miles south at Silverthorne. Wife didn't love that too much, but she loved the space. No neighbors right up on ya, like in Houston.

The only problem was, that all our 6 kids (between us) and our 12 grandkids, all live in Houston area. Her son had a heart scare last November and she freaked. We were looking at a rush trip home, but it all passed. Then, we got the humongous offer to sell our house and up and did it.

Moved back to Spring - 103 degrees yesterday. Nearly expired (melted) on the golf course. I love being able to play 3-4 days a week. My handicap has gone into single digits for first time in 25 years. The heat is the only problem. We will probably stay here, now that we are back with all our family again.

But the thought of cooler weather (even snow) sure sounds great. Go for it, if you can manage and the solitude won't drive you bonkers. Sing and play for the buffalo and enjoy yourself while you can. You deserve it.

    Hey Gensu!!

Right now I think we are just going to pursue the land. If I can find 10/20/30/+ acres I'll probably just go for it. Maybe later on build a house on it or two and move. Just having the property should be a pretty solid investment. Gotta fly out soon and check out some places and see what's what.

Good to see you around bro. You planning any scary skiing trips for this winter? ;)

Blues what's the weather like in Northern Cali (all 4 seasons) ? Like how hot does it get in the summer, how's the humidity, how much snow in the winter? Are there any palm trees in northern Cali?

Gets rather hot here in summer, 100+ for quite a few days. Gets down in the 30's during winter, have some rain here and there. I am in a good spot, snow and mountains only about 30 minutes away in a couple of directions.

dude, montana, I got some friends that live there.
    Two words:
    Melll-oooow
They got the right attitude in that state. Nobody messes with anybody else, you just go about your business, be polite to people you see in town and then go home, where you don't have to hear anybody else.
and as far as communication with family. Packet8's got a videophone I hear good things about.

Put a place on the top of the Devil's Tower and I'll come rent from ya. ha ha

You'll like the wide open spaces. Verrry cold though.

We're going to visit some friends in Steamboat in November, but probably not go skiing til Feb or so. Seriously cold in January.

Good luck on your land search.

I had a friend that bought about a square mile of land in Utah, ten years ago. It’s mostly sand, and a few rocks, and flat, very flat. There is one hill, that’s about seven feet high. He built a 20 foot by 20 foot room, about seven years ago, on the hill. He’s working and living in Alaska, until he retires. Don’t know what he paid for it, or where in Utah it’s at……you get that much room, just have to make the wife a few rooms and sound proof them……wobbles

got out of california 30-some years ago after my tour with uncle sam. best thing ever. live in colorado some distance from denver with a 1000 square foot shop. big enough for the woodworking I do. a nice pellet stove in the shop keeps me toasty warm during the worst days of winter. a ten foot walk from the back door of the house to the shop is tough. we live in a very small community south of pueblo (I've got a 25 mile drive to find a traffic light) but it offers all of the big city ammenities we need, ie; electricity, water and fiber optic telephone and internet service. that is something you need to think about before moving way out in the boonies. I would love to move to North Dakota, but the wife would kill me. make sure you get a big enough electrical service to that shop of yours. you can never have enough electricity.

price of land just depends on where you want to buy. the denver area is going the way of calif; construction everywhere with new homes and business. from colorado springs north to cheyenne, wyoming, and from watkins, east of denver thru the mountains all the way to grand junction, real estate prices have risen considerably in the past ten years, albeit they are still a heck of a lot cheaper than out here in calif. south of colo spgs you can buy 40 acre parcels as cheap as $35,000 with electricity and phone service at the property line. if you need to put a well in for water it could get expensive, but that's something you need to determine. parts of montana are also going the way of calif as a lot of the hollywood-wannabe-mountain people and ranchers have purchased large pieces of property up there. wyoming is not the same. cheyenne is about the only area along with jackson hole where real estate has appreciated a bit. wyoming, especially, it is "leave me alone and I'll leave you alone"! if you don't smoke, wyoming is not the place to openly complain about everyone who does. they will let you know to "pay for your gas and get the hell back to wherever you came from!"
Land and property prices anywhere out here just depend on location. You have to be the one to decide where you want to live and if you're able to afford it. good luck, and don't trust brochures and the likes of what's his face eric estrada. I believe you can do a lot of hunting for places on www.realtor.com you can find all kinds of information thru their site. also I think UNITED FARM AGENCY is still around, do a google search for them. passed thru sacramento a month ago and was a week at walnut creek. thought it was bad down here in LA. God, don't know how you stand it out here. later
