1974 AMC Javelin, fresh restore, new 401 and Trans. Went to an Auto Show at the beach this afternoon and saw this. Numbers and Engine don't match but the wife likes the color. The guy is asking $12,500. AMC's are somewhat rare and a bit unique, so I have something to think about for the rest of the weekend...

    The price isn't too bad.

I wouldn't worry about a numbers-matching '74. Nader pretty much killed the muscle car era right about then, so a stock 401 in '74 was probably only running around 200hp. So in my opinion, a modified '74 is waaaayyy better than a stock '74.

I actually prefer the Javelin over the AMX. The Javelin has longer lines and a cooler stance, if you ask me.

Good luck if you decide to go with it!

I have no idea on the car as its not one used in the UK... BUT holy poop that is a nice looking car... I love the classics beter than the modern cars, even tho I drive a modern 2.4l 5cyl italian lump.

gotta buy that one Jerky :)

Yeah, its coded as having a 304 ci, the 401 was the biggest you could opt for in any AMC. And that 401 is NOT stock. A new 750 cfm Holly Carb, mild cam, port & polish with headers & duals. AMC dropped the AMX line and merged it with Javelin... so there are Javelin AMX's out there. For the price I can afford to drive it without worrying too much as I would with a higher end collector car. If it was a higher end car... I couldn't afford it anyway!

    Here's the other side...

Test drove it today... Its got BALLS !!! I was really surprised how well it ran and felt. Quick response, good breaks and not inside or outside rattles considering its age. There are a few things he needs to fix (warped front rotor and alignment). We made and offer and are waiting by the phone. He has a business partner to talk too first.

Had one, long long ago. Paid $400 for it in the 80's. Was sweet, until I got t-boned at an intersection with 4 people in the car. Car was wrecked, not a scratch on us. That one looks pretty nice to me!

I decided to pass on the car. I think it was worth the money and would have been allot of fun. We could afford it but after searching for the items that it did need (mainly interior & dash and the AC components), the cost of them is more than I could manage at this time... I am a very impatient person when it come to things like that and if I see it on Ebay would have to have it then. I do get to build a new computer at least, will be asking for input on that in a few weeks

Well that's one thing about classic cars, the rarer they are, the harder the parts are to find and the more expensive they are. There aren't nearly as many manufacturers reproducing AMC parts as there are Chevy. Even some Ford parts can be hard to come by.

If you go with a Camaro or Chevelle, parts are cheap and plentiful, yet if you go with the same year Le Mans, GTO, Skylark, etc, they'll be a little togher to find.

Thats what sucks. If you want something rare that you don't see at every show, you're gonna have a hell of a time finding parts. If on the other hand you pick up a '69 "Cookie-cutter" Camaro, parts are a dime a dozen.

I learned the hard way when I restored my Galaxie. At the time, NOBODY was making repro parts. I had to find everything on ebay. This time around I went with a Bel Air, and am not having any problems finding parts.

Keep looking. You'll find the right car.
