I need some serious help here!!
I have had, what looks to be, the google redirect virus on my computer about 6 days now. i have tried everything! i formatted 3 times:banghead, i have run every antivirus/malware/spyware program i could find. the only ones i am runing right now are the ones that are laid out in the READ & RUN ME FIRST post. I did a hard reset on my modem and router. nothing is working! every 2ed or 3ed time i go on to google to do a search it gives me sites that have nothing to do with what i was looking for, the tab in firefox actually says "redirect". i have a laptop on my network and i haven't really noticed anything wrong with it, BUT i dont use it that much. im thinking about doing some kind of low level format on my drive (maybe something is left over from the last windows install) but i am running a SSD. that cant be good for it.

any help would be amazing Thank you!!!

Run TDSSKiller again, download a fresh version:

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Questions

    • Boot into safe mode and surf around a while. Do the redirects still occur?
    • What happens if you use a different browser?
    • Are any other search engines being redirected also? Bing, Yahoo for example?
    • Have you tried disabling all firefox add ons and seeing if it occurs then?
Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Also address all my questions please.

so i started with safe mode. i must have done 50 searches, everything was good! i then came back in to regular windows and started doing searches in firefox using google again. i must have done another 50 random searches again and all of them where good!!
i then remember seeing something in the ESETScan log. it said it deleted something from my firefox backup file called XULCache{1.0}.xpi. i did a quick search on it and found people taking about a redirect virus. it now makes sense why it came back after doing 3 formats. im not %100 sure if its gone but so far so good. do you have any idea what that file is? have you seen it befor? why didn't any other scan pick it up? should i still try the other thing you asked?

I think ESET may have just done it for you. :)

I don't think there is any need for you to go through disabling browser add ons if you say you are no longer being redirected. Here is some information on the threat you asked about.

    TrojanDownloader

    If all is well...

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
