This is not good. My dog is hurt.

In case you do not know, Fred_G is my dog's name. Fred G Dog. I have had Fred for around 13 years. Fred was diagnosed with hip displaisia when he was a puppy. That vet said put him down. I found a new vet. Yesterday, Fred was chasing rabbits in the yard! Today, he can barely walk. I am taking him to the vet Monday.

This has happened every few years, just never this bad. Usually an aspirin every 4 hours would have him fixed up in half a day. His back legs just don't work right. I know what the end result is going to be one day. I just hope it is not anytime soon. Hopefully the vet can help my mutt out, and get him back to chasing animals for a few more years!

When I look into his eyes, his mind is still sharp. But I see something else, confusion or pain, I am not sure. I may have a very hard decision to make Monday. Or I might get lucky and some drugs will help the dog.

Well, thanks for letting me post this, it has taken a long time to type. Damn hard to see what you are typing at times.

As I am sure you saw in the other Dog thread, those of us who have them know they are part of the family. Sending best wishes and warm thoughts for your four legged kid. Hope everything works out OK for both of you.

Thanks Calltaker. It is not looking good. Fred cannot seem to stand up anymore. If I thought it would help, I would take him to the emergency clinic, but all his records are at the vet that we have gone to for years. And the emergency clinic is not very good.

I got in touch with my boss, and if I have to, I have monday off.

Sorry to hear that about your little buddy. We use to have a dog that would get like that one day he would be running and jumping and the next he would be stiff as a board not able to move then the next he would be back running and jumping again. His name was buster a nice little white long hair about 15 years old.

    Hope he gets better.

bless you fred. i'm so sorry that YOUR fred is not well. hopefully a little rest will help. dogs are amazingly resilient, and i will pray that this is so in this case. meanwhile try ibuprofen, as that is more efficient with arthritic type injuries. make sure you give it with food though, as it can upset the stomach. you will be in my thoughts tonight. aloha

    Update on Fred

Well, Fred would not budge from where he laid down last night until it was time to go to the vet. He slowly got up and limped outside. It was not looking good.

Well, it looks like he has arthritis in his spine, lost some muscle mass in his right leg, and a few other minor problems. The vet gave him a Cortisone shot, some pain pills, and he starts some meds for arthritis in a couple of days. He should be more or less back to normal in a day or two!

It is amazing how attached you can get to the four legged things! Thanks for the kind words.

Glad to hear that Fred should be back to his old self again. I can't imagine what I would do without my furry kids. They are such wonderful beings, they give us unconditional love and are always willing to listen when you need someone to talk to. Being someone who suffers from a depressive disorder, I know that they help keep me on an even keel most days.

Fred is almost back to normal now. He ran some today, not a speed record, but he thought that rabbit was going down! Bugs got away, but damn, last night he could not stand up!

I have to talk to the vet some about the meds she gave him, looks like they can fry the liver, but if it gives him a few more years of being a dog, I will be happy. At his age, it is a quality of life type of thing.

Thanks again for being there for me.

Glad Fred is better, you might want to check with vet about letting him run tho, friends dog has similar problem n on meds, but not allowed to run fast anymore, has to be on extended lead (the retractable) now.

People that say you can't buy happiness, have never brought a puppy home.Acquiring a dog may be the only opportunity a human ever has to choose a relative. I hope your relative is feeling better.

So glad he recovers. However, maybe he's getting too old to chase rabbits. You said he's 13. Why not trying keeping him away from "sports"?

The vet told me Fred will decide if he wants to run. And the only animals he chases are the ones that come in his yard. He stays inside with me or in a fenced in yard. I kinda live in the country, so the small animals are always around.

Fred is pretty much back to normal now! He stands up a little slow, but other than that he is doing good and not in pain. Thanks for the replies!

Pretty much the same with kids. When they got sick the doctor said don't try to keep them in bed (impossible task) that they'll lay down on their own.

PS thats why I won't have a dog, too much like kids. LOL

Glad to hear he's doing ok, especially after reading your first post.

I didn't reply sooner because my dog also got ill and I wasn't sure what was going to happen to her either. She started falling over and throwing up. In the end she couldn't get up at all. I did my back in by carrying her in and out of the house and to the vets, but it was worth it because she's nearly back to normal now. It was some sort of stroke (acute vestibular episode) according to the vet. Steroids and anti sickness drugs seem to have sorted her out.

If you care about them, they are never 'just a dog', and they're good friends to have.
