The racing of the Melbourne Cup in 1974(?) is something to watch if it's on youtube. You could barely see the horses through the driving rain as they came into the home stretch.
I went back five years ago and two days before I flew home it started to rain, and didn't stop for more than a day. Somehow I managed to get to the airport - a good 70 miles from my mother's house - in time to catch my plane. The freeway out from the city was snail's pace. In fact, a snail could probably have done it quicker.
There were a few cars stuck in the median strip, bogged to the axles. Impatient drivers thought they might get clear of the traffic jam. Didn't stop to think what all that rain might have done to the soil!

yes it looks bad but some good has come out of this.some of the effected areas like central west Queensland were in dire need of rain. some of these places haven't seen decent rain in decades dams that were on the brink of empty are now chokers.sometimes you have to endure some bad things to reap the positives. i feel bad for Melbourne but to the places that need it its a blessing.

iwunder, yes, it's good to see that rain falling where it's needed. I suppose I'm a tad jealous.. This isn't the time when we get a lot of rain anyway in WA, but we've had a few almost-thunderstorms just dissipate since the start of the year.

I didn't hear of any serious injuries but there were other news reports that had people cut and bruised by the hail.

It was our turn on the west coast yesterday afternoon.

One very strange aspect of storms in Perth is that bad weather can be a very local phenomenon. I live about five miles from where I work as the crow flies - my neighbourhood got a good showering but there didn't appear to be much storm damage. At work we had a hailstorm that lasted about half an hour - we had the roller door open at the back and the hail was coming down with such force that it was skidding into the warehouse.
No golf balls for us, but a lot that would have been about the size of hazelnuts. One hailstone shattered on impact with the asphalt, revealing a pea-sized core. I'd estimate its full size as about that of a walnut.
When we shut the shop at 5 it was almost as dark as night. As I walked up the street to home an hour later, there was an amazing sunset. Creamy coloured light created grey-blue shadows; I've never seen anything like it before.

I was going to say in the youtube video looked like the car was in the hail storm parked in the open IMO. I was waiting for the scroll over with the cam and show holes in the windows. But then I think its funny but not funny when you have to pay for it. Also another note this last picture is something I seen when my mom got our family very 1st brand new car ever. Mom finally got tired of having older small trucks and cars that were always needing fix some way or another.. and hell the bills were more then the 1500 dollar car/truck we had. Anyways I tell my mother for those bills she paid out she could've had a new cheaper car by now. Anyways in 2000 or 2002 my mom got her brand new neon car. Brand new very nice car for her.. very good moment for family with slim income. Anyways she brought the car home and hail storm that night. Car windows all busted out, dents in the hood and trunk and roof. Anyways sucks we didn't have no insurance at the time for it for being brand new. Anyways we ended up paying good few grand for dents and windows.

Silas - that's a heap of bad luck with that new car.
iwunder - Global Warming is responsible for everything, and that includes your grandmother's killer farts.
