    Hi and Welcome

Can you explain in more detail what your issue, is as thrashing (but note in your text you also say trashing, a typo prehaps), at a guess you are referring to the Hard Drive constantly accessing the drive?

    What Windows version?

Does this happen all the time, or only when doing a specific task or running a specific application, do tell us step by step how this issue starts.

    Hi

Trashing of the hard drive as in a constant stream of I/O (Input Output) of data on your HDD ypu should see from the HDD light if fitted to your case will be virtually perminently on, and depending on how quiet your HDD is you may hear a grinding noise.

In the main at startup you may get a lot of HDD action but after a while it slows as most tasks and apps are loaded, so if it doesn't then look to see what starts up with your PC as many startup applications can cause excess HDD action, a search indexer, the Google one did cause this to happen to many pcs but latest updates are ok, could be a scheduled defrag or virus scan.

Let us know if your HDD light is constantly on or not?

Is your Windows XP fully uptown date at SP3?

What you could do us to monitor disk I/0 by using Task Manager and click view > select columns > tick the first 5 I/O references don't need last one. and then in the Processes tab you will now see those titles, sort from highest to lowest and see what process is using the highest I/O

Maybe good to post a screeshot of the tip 10 processes, won't need any of the others just the top few and we can advise.
