Last night I went to add Thunderbird and it could not connect to Gmail. Today I get a email from Gmail saying that it prevented someone from logging into my account last night (which would have been me). It says it does this to protect me from less secure apps like Outlook and Thunderbird. So, is Thunderbird less secure or is this another part of the plot for Google to control the world?

Thunderbird and Outlook clients both work just fine with Gmail but your Gmail account online need to be configured correctly first. The settings are under Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Once you have done that you can then configure your account in the clients.
