The oldest computer can be traced back to Adam and Eve. It was an Apple.
But with extremely limited memory, just one byte.
    Then everything crashed.

Okay - so how many know what this is? Can have two uses - but what was its original use?

Ha! Love those...especially the bottom one. I work in a library and while it's certainly nostalgic, I have to say it's one thing I'm incredibly glad the computer took it's place.

Couldn't agree with you more. However, at one of the university's Law Library, there are some very old and/or special references which uses the old system - mainly because the hardcopies are so delicate or not uploaded to computer and/or must be read at the library within a certain time before being handed back to the Librarian.

    Only in movies. :p

My mom used a washing machine with one of these attached to the top rear of the machine.

I've seen those washboards at some camping sites where there aren't facilities - just a running stream - so those boards are quite effective for a good scrub of grubby clothes when out bush.;)

As a kid when we used to rent, I remember our old landlady had one of those in the laundry - which mum never used.

We had one of those old Pope wringer washers, looked sosmething like this - and I can't tell you the number of times one of my arms would end up tangled in the wringer when feeding through bed sheets - screams would bring one of my parents scampering to rescue me - so finally I was no longer allowed to use the wringer:p:

That old wringer washer lasted well into my teens too! Couldn't kill the bloody thing with a double barrel shotgun!

To go offtopic, to LauraR, what is happening with " Revo Uninstaller Support" That person seems to be online 24/7 or they're dead, or they've lapsed into unconsciousness and can't log off. Please find an answer. Thx.

Interesting that the rare/valuable books still use the card system. I understand the need for caution. We have that as well. Maybe to keep demand down?

Eldon asked me about them before. The email links back to Revo, so they are legit. No idea why they are on nonstop. They must have something that keeps them that way. Not much we can do unless they turn out to be spammers, which I don't think they do. Ask a post question about Revo and see if that activates them. ;)

Besides as a matter of caring for the books - I believe it's mainly to keep theft down given the tight reign of having staff hand books over the counter and receiving them back while managing the loaning...ironic?:p:D:rolleyes:

Last one is great and while we in work have electronic medical records, they are in two formats, new which is really searchable and the older paper scanned recored which if you have to look through them are a nightmare as not searchable unless someones bookmarked a clinic or department page, they are scanned in any order and with blank pages! (really some idiot thought lets scan the blank pages).

If they were scanned to PDF, you can use OCR to make them searchable.

And how many here remember party lines? When phone numbers started with 2 letters. As in FU=Fulton=38, GA=Garden=42

When we bought our house from an older couple. It had a wringer washer like that in the basement.

And years ago my father brought home a wire recorder.

    Totally agree!

"New" records if properly scanned from hard to softcopy or softcopy loaded are great for searching - easy peasy.

    Extract from:
Old hardcopy records or those "older paper scanned record" like you say can be a proper nightmare if not scanned properly, proving totally useless...discovered the "Hyde" side of myself with these type of encounters...:D

Oh Lordy! Party lines! Remember those...actually on occasion ended up on a date after a good chat:p

    Must've been a pretty old couple:D

Now I'm stumped. What's a "wire recorder"? Is that two cans with a string attached in between?:p:D

Okay looks like a voice recorder - but doesn't produce anything visual? Looks 1940's-1950's era?

Have to push the handle backwards and forwards to mow the lawn. Man, that's really old "technology"!
