I download the W98se updater on a HP XP notebook...

When I went to install the CD in a W98se PC, I got a popup stating that this program is not for this computer's operating system...
Seems the download got tagged for XP...

Is there a way to defeat that glitch?.. so I can load the W98se unofficial updater CD, burned on a XP PC?.. into a W98se PC..?

The OS is not an issue when you are downloading files to your HDD or any removable media. All you are doing is placing those files on that particular storage device.

If these files will not install, its possible you have downloaded a corrupt or unrecognized file structure.
You did mention it was an unofficial update? from?

Ok.. I'm beginning to see what happened to cause this big mess...

I also loaded onto that CD, the other two W98se updaters.. a PP something, and the updater with IE6 in it... I formated C again, and reloaded the system, plus the unofficial, from Majorgeeks again... This time the CD worked to load the unofficial W98se updater... Then I loaded the updater package with IE6 in it, from MG as well, and that's when things got all messed up again.. and a DX popup comes up on every boot...
