I think that I have to many programs running on start up.Which might be why it takes Quake 4 10mins to load.
The problem is that I don't know what I need .
    Can anyone help.

    Thanx

CK - I have 35 entries in task manager
    dromano - i'll give it a look.
I have just worked out that if I turn of my anti virus it solves the loading time in Quake 4.
But 35 must be a lot.

    35 is fairly standard
but there are a lot of variables
as far as programs you have installed

Just check to see if any of them are running high cpu or memory usage

coincidentally I have 35 running at the moment

Which antivirus program are you running ?

Also what are your computer stats

    CPU
    RAM
    Graphics card
    OS
    etc

the more details you supply the easier it is for someone to help you with your problem

    My stats are:-
    Asus P5B Deluxe
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 unlocked
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
    Crucial 2GB kit (1GBx2)CT2KIT12864AA53E
    (micron D9GMH)4-4-4-12 @ 1.8v
HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT 256MB
    Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
Lian Li 6085 case ,BenQ dvd rw,Plextor cd rw
    AV is Zone Alarm ss
I went to the link that Dromano posted .The progran said that they were all low memory usage. So I am not to worried now .Although there are a few that don't need to be there but I don't know how to stop them running at start up.

you can try this program for managing your processes

or here is a guide for doing it manually

ten minutes is a long time for an antivirus program to stop a game from loading

I would consider taking a look at the malware section
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

if you do, start off by following the post near the top named

    good luck

    I'll give them a look.
Being a new setup and I've had Spyware doctor & Zone alarm installed straight away.so there should not be anything bad on the pc.
As for the AV it was on access scanning that when disabled solved problem. It scans every time a file is open, closed or exe.

I guess if it is scanning the games .exe each time it would take a while :D
