i am new to the major geeks forum, so hello to everybody....

i am currently using W2K on both my PC and the wifes, which are networked for file sharing and internet access with a router.

i do lots of video editing with adobe premiere, and i tend to have a compulsive addiction to upgrading my PC's

i also play games too, but, i found the other day a couple of demos i downloaded would only work on XP! needless to say these games came from Microsoft.

so the question is, is it viable for me to upgrade to XP or stay with 2K and the other question is, which one, xp home or pro?

I'd make sure my bread and butter apps work with XP. I've seen some compatibility problems going from W2K to XP.

I use both windows 2k and XP at home (dad refused to updgrage to XP). I myselft like XP better. After switching everything to classic mode (like control panel), it felt just like I was using an updated version of 2k, with better funcitonality.

If you are planning to buy the thing, then I would probably wait for Vista.

    thanks all for the feedback

I had thought about waiting for vista, but, correct me if i am wrong, i haven't seen an official release date for it apart from i think it was late 2006.

but none the less i will keep looking and try to make an informed choice.

    thanks again all

2000 is practically XP, its the easiest Upgrade path to date. Clean installs are still better.

Id go with XP pro, it's fairly cheap right now.
Some local small computer shops offer deals maybe where if you buy a hard drive or something you get the OEM for dirt cheap, check around.
I bought a hard drive for $110, then got OEM XP PRO/sp2 for about the same.
Vista is gonna come out with 9 versions or something ridiculous like that.
I don't plan on getting it for awhile, unless my buddy at micro$oft hooks me up again with a free OS and other stuff.

My point was that we have several apps that don't play well with XP, and we have had to keep some users at W2K for that reason. He said something about work apps and his new games. I was just cautioning him to make sure he could still do his work with an XP box. :)
