I'm looking at Windows Task Manager and it's currently saying I have 59 processes running!! Why do I have so many and how can I prevent these from running again?

    Any help would be appreciated.

That is not much. Why are you so worried about all the processes running? I have 39, and that is only because I am running AVG, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Printkey2k, and WeatherPulse. You can use something like ProcessExplorer to see what is running.

Just don't like some of the names, like dlbtbmgr.exe and dragdiag.exe whatever that is. Plus it's taking up RAM.

    Let me guess, a Dell?

    dlbtbmgr.exe:

    dlbtbmgr - dlbtbmgr.exe - Process Information

    Process File: dlbtbmgr or dlbtbmgr.exe
Process Name: Dell Photo AIO Button Manager

    Description:
dlbtbmgr.exe is a process installed alongside Dell Photo AIO and provides additional button configuration options for these devices. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

    dragdiag.exe:

    dragdiag - dragdiag.exe - Process Information

    Process File: dragdiag or dragdiag.exe
    Process Name: Dragdiag

    Description:
dragdiag.exe is installed with Alcatel aDSL modems. A tray icon is installed with this process which allows quick access to this diagnostic and configuration utility. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems

Guess you do not know your system too well, since these process are need for both the modem, which is probably hooked up via USB. But then again, the Dell photo software can be removed from your system is you do not edit photos, or have a digital camera.

OK cheers, yes indeed a DELL. What I don't get is I have 7 processes all named SVCHOST.exe, some running from SYSTEM and some running from NETWORK SERVICE.

SVChost, is actully a number of system processes for networking. I would not worry about them. Like I stated, ProcessExplorer works wonders in what processes do what, especially SVCHost.

59 processes is a little high, me i have 24 to show what is starting
goto run and type msconfig and on startup and see what is there.....

AOLSP Scheduler, we aren't even with AOL. So should I switch that off?

Run HIJackThis, and attach as a attached file, along with a ProcessExplorer file. From there, we can help in letting you know what to keep and what to toss.

You could try something other then Norton. That alone is half of the processes that are running in the background. AVG or Avast are ligher on the process load then Norton.

I would recommend following these instructions to tweak your system for performance. This includes minimizing the number of background processes, as well as quite a few other things you can do for speed.

OK cheers. :) I have another question, how do I know if I've got a graphics card or built in graphics on the motherboard?? It's an Intel 82865G.

The easiest way to tell is to see where the monitor is plugged in. If it is in the backplane (the piece of metal that you plug PS/2 mice and keyboards into, sounds jacks, parallel ports, etc), then it is on the motherboard. If it is in an exansion slot, (usually the top one) then you have a graphics card. Why do you ask? Are you thinking of an upgrade? You should be able to in either case, provided you have the right slots available on your machine.

Yes, I'm thinking of an upgrade was looking at a nVIDIA GeForce 7600GT for £111 before.

A system info utility like EVEREST will tell you whether you have any PCI-express slots in your computer for this video card.

Yeah, I've got it it's got so much information, where can I find where it says I have any?
