Too many PUPs to manually remove...

Hellooooo! I'm back. It's my neighbor's girlfriend's computer (Compaq laptop Win 7 Home Premium). He dropped it off and said "she says it says it has 33 viruses...."

Well, to the best of my knowledge, there doesn't appear to be any type of "serious" virus on the machine. What I did find is about 33 instances of bloatware and browser add-ons/PUPs/browser redirections and the etc. malware that comes with that.

After cleaning out the programs and removing many extensions from Chrome, I'm no longer seeing any annoying software pop-ups and the machine runs super smooth (there's barely anything else on it anyways) but every time I open Chrome, Avast alerts me to some suspicious redirection activity going on in the background. I installed Avast after I removed a non-operating/responsive copy of Norton Internet Security. I also never looked at IE and the extensions (it doesn't look like she's been using IE, but.......) ....sorry about that, I've been busy and as a result a bit lazy with this.

Regardless, I've removed many a simple redirection problem manually, but this one looks to be a bit more extensive than I'm used to. The woman who owns the machine really misses her internet banking, and I don't feel safe knowing she's going to use it for that purpose without a look at the logs and further instructions from you guys.

Logs are attached. Thank you, as always, for your time and this amazing service you provide!!

Re run Hitman Pro and have it remove all it finds.

Re run Malware Bytes and have it fix anything else it may see.

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [Suspicious.Path] UpdaterEX.job -- C:\Users\ANN-MA~1\AppData\Roaming\UPDATE~1\UPDATE~1\UPDATE~1.EXE (/Check) -> Found
    • [Suspicious.Path] \\UpdaterEX -- C:\Users\ANN-MA~1\AppData\Roaming\UPDATE~1\UPDATE~1\UPDATE~1.EXE (/Check) -> Found

Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

    • Re run Hitman (just a scan) and attach log.
    • Same for RogueKiller.
    • Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
    • Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

Hi! Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I was distracted while going through this list and I missed an important part!

Ran hitman and removed all. Ran MBAM and it found nothing.

Here's where I messed up - ran Rogue Killer and was distracted....so the first tab was empty and thought "oh, don't see those registry items...they must be gone!" DUH. Reminder to self, do not do this stuff while a friend is gabbing on with some long winded story. I didn't really realize my mistake until I ran RK for the second time, and by then it was too late....

Soo, after I ran RK the first time and made that mistake, I continued with JRT. Then I ran Hitman again, then ran RK again (and it's at this point that I realized I forgot to hit the registry tab - sorry!!!) - when I did go to the registry tab this time, I didn't see those entries you listed...

Then I ran MG tools again. I have logs from JRT, Hitman and MGtools for you. No RK log because I didn't do it right! Again, I'm sorry!!

Please let me know what I need to run again at this point. There's still a bunch of background redirecting going on in Chrome and lots of ads making the pages jump around - "ad by GoSave" shows up where Google ads typically would.

Thank you, and again, I apologize for my mistakes!! I am confident you can get me back on the right track!

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\Users\Ann-Marie\AppData\Local\dsi1.dat
    C:\ProgramData\adf80ae5fb1c0699
    C:\ProgramData\GGoSave
    C:\ProgramData\YoutiubeADBloccke
    C:\Program Files (x86)\GGoSave
    C:\Program Files (x86)\YoutiubeADBloccke

    :reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{6A1806CD-94D4-4689-BA73-E35EA1EA9990}]

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into a text file to ATTACH into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    • Reboot, if OTM didn't prompt.
    • Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
    • Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

okee dokey....back on track! That all went well. Attached are logs from OTM and a new MGtools log.

I'm still getting warnings from Avast when I open Chrome about blocking redirections to "harmful webpage or file" to a whole slew of weird sites with like "coupon" and such in the name...

    Thank you!!

Is it only Google Chrome where you are having issues?
Let's try for a more thorough uninstall of Google Chrome.

All of these components need to be uninstalled: (Using Revo Uninstaller!!)

    • Google Chrome
      Google Update Helper

Now do this (DO NOT reinstall Google Chrome yet)

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Hmmmm....yes, it's looking like it was all in Chrome. Opened IE (for the first time since I've been working on this machine) before I proceeded with the Chrome uninstall and IE appears to be OK. Avast wasn't freaking out!

So, I uninstalled Chrome via the utility you suggested. Google Updater was not in the list.

    MG log is attached!! Thanks!!

It's still showing so do this:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Also delete this
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Google

Reboot and now reinstall Google Chrome and let me know how it behaves.

OK! The RegEdit was successful! Deleted the Google program file, rebooted and reinstalled Chrome. No more Avast freakouts or weird activities at this time!!

    Thank you!!

Sure? Ready for final steps? If so, they are below. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
