It is not bad, but it would not hurt to copy the info from my last message into a file named hosts and save it in the c:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.

Also try opening up a command prompt window by clicking Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. Now in the command prompt window enter the below commands each followed by the enter key.
    ipconfig /flushdns
    exit

Now are things working any better with respect to yahoo. If not, try using an IP address rather than a URL. Like use 66.94.230.51 instead of www.yahoo.com

OK. I copied to the hosts file. I flushed DNS. It wouldn't display anything typing yahoo.com so i typed the ip address. It said "IE could not open search page".

Do you think my computer is not recognizing the cable modem?

Explain to me how you are getting to majorgeeks if you "cannot get to any website whether be the name or IP address."? Are you still doing all the correspondence from another PC at work?

Please download and install Mozilla Firefox

Try using it to access websites. Does it work OK?

Are you sure your cable modem is working properly?

Does your PC get an IP address assigned to it?

Go to the command prompt again and type:
    ipconfig /all

Paste the output of that back here.

Right now I'm writing from work. When I'm at home I'm writing from my wife's laptop. I guess I can download Mozilla Firefox and burn to cd. Take home and install right???

    Thanks,

Yes you can do that! Have you discussed this problem at all with your cable company?

Do you only have the one PC at home? Can you check for connectivity with another PC at home?

Only have one PC at home but I do use the laptop to connect and I have no problems at all. So I dont think its a modem problem. Can it be that my PC is not recognizing the modem???
I will install FireFox this evening when I get home and post back.

    Thanks,
    T.Blue

I'm confused! I thought the laptop is what you are using all along and you cannot connect to any websites with it. So what does the above mean.

When you say modem, do you mean cable modem. The cable modem provides an ethernet interface to your PCs Network Interface Card (NIC). You should be getting an IP address, DNS Server settings, DHCP Server setting etc from the cable company. And your PC should normally be set for DHCP.

I'm sorry for the confusion. My problems are on my home PC. My wife has a laptop that I've been corresponding with. I can use the same cable modem to connect to the internet on my wifes laptop with no problems. All we do is plug it in and it connects.

As far as settings that you are talking about I dont really know that much.
I think my computer is set to automatically detect the IP address?? Other than that I'm kinda lost. I never had any problems connecting before all this stuff starting happening....meaning before the toolbar.desktoptraffic.net took over.

Okay! Here is what confused me. You said
So what you really meant is you have two PCs but only one is normally connected. We may still need to check some settings to see if you are set for DHCP.

Get me the output of the ipconfig command I gave in message # 55 . You can redirect it to a file and upload the file to make it easier. Do this:

    ipconfig /all > c:\ipcfg.txt

Then upload c:\ipcfg.txt file here as an attachment.

Chase your not gonna believe this. I feel like such an IDIOT. I called my cable company and they walked me thru a couple of things. Somehow my LAN got disconnected...jeez...never looked at that.  I'm online now on the PC I was having all the problems with.
I have attached a HJ log so you can look and make sure I'm clean.
I really want to apologize for never checking that.
Also thanks for all of your help along with BJ and Philly you dont know how appreciated it is!!!!!!

Do you still want me to do the ipconfig/all ????

After I hear back I will do the "How to protect yourself from Malware" sticky
