Our home town got smashed last night. Tornado touched down and cut an 11 mile swath through the middle of town. Seven people dead that we know of, many houses damaged, at least two that we know of totally destroyed. Every power pole for over two miles are gone. Power won't be restored for these people of at least a week. National guard and state police are on patrol. Tornado warnings are happening again tonight.

Tis the season of the wind. :(

Friends lost their house. Husband was the only one there at the time, hid in a closet and by the grace of whoever, that was all that remained standing. We were on the north side of the storm and had no damage this time, only power out for 24 hours. Hardly any trees are still standing in town.

Wow, did not get much in Louisiana. Glad you are ok, hate to hear about the ones that did not make it.

We have a chance for hail and possible tornadoes tonight. So far, just some wind and some clouds.

Theres more coming Tim, stay safe. I hope your friends can get back to even as soon as possible.

Here we thought it was going to tornado. The sky was this weird shade of green - not tornado green.. more like minty misty green - and Golf ball sized hail pummeled the house for several minutes today. I was watching the sky to see if I needed to put my babies in the basement. (Sorry they don't have many basements where you are)

Tim, I hope you and your loved ones keep safe.

We get cyclones but at least we usually have 2-3 days warning.

    All the best.

This is all over the news. This is just horrendous!

The town looks like they were in the middle of a war zone that just got bombed. It's leveled. Jeez...those poor people.

My God. That is truly a frightening thing - it's amazing how long those monsters stay on the ground.

Horrendous to hear that over 200 people have passed away due to tornadoes. Looks like the leftovers of homes and buildings are no higher than a few feet.

RIP to the people who found an untimely death, strength and solace to the survivors.

It's tragic.:( All those deaths and all those people having to rebuild their homes and business. So sad.

The science of weather is a powerful thing. When things 'align', the destruction can be unbelievable.

From what I've seen this was considered to be an 'EF5' magnitude tornado (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Fujita_Scale) "Total destruction of buildings. Strong framed, well built houses leveled off foundations and swept away; steel-reinforced concrete structures are critically damaged; tall buildings collapse or have severe structural deformations."

I wasn't aware they rated tornadoes like they do hurricanes.

My understanding is that these storms are going to start heading up the eastern coast. :(

The storms just skirted us (South Carolina, close to Myrtle Beach) - several severe thunderstorms and several tornado warnings, but very few touchdowns and no major damage in our area.

We got lucky - this time.

I got lucky, just lost internet for a day and a half. We had a couple of deaths in the area, got almost 8" of rain, some people still have no power. but no tornado damage that I am aware of.

That stuff in Alabama and Miss., that is rough. I feel for those people.

I feel so bad for the people down there, the pictures coming out of there are horrible. :(

The same storm system moved through here... no one died, thank god, but two small tornadoes touched down, took out a couple houses, a bunch of trees, and two horses. The winds were terrible, and the hail. Half the state is underwater now, because it hasn't stopped raining all month, and then to dump torrential rain on top of fully saturated ground.. it's a mess. Bridges, banks, buildings, roads all washing away... streets underwater. I'm so glad our family is unscathed.

The two houses that were hit were close calls. The one family got into the basement within 10 seconds of the roof flying off and the chimney crashing down where they were just standing, and the little old lady in the other house, it ripped her house apart except for, miraculously, the room she was sleeping in.
