For the past several days, at the conclusion of using QuarkXpress 7.2, I receive an error message indicating the Explorer has stopped working. Two options are given: check online for a solution and restart the program and restart.

I have a Sony Viao VGN-SZ670N/C laptop running Vista Business SP1.

Upon examine the dialogue box, I clicked on details and received the following information:

Read this thread. It seems that you need to update a driver at Toshiba's site. Link here.

    Thanks guys!

Halo: Tried reinstalling original .dll and problems still persists. Explorer crashes and requires app to restart.

Cordialis: When I followed suggestions to rename TosBtShell.dll by tacking on ".old" at the end, I assume it disables that comm port, the problem appears to disappear. Hopefully, this ends the problem with Explorer crashing. Will have to wait and see if instances arise.

    Spoke too soon...

It seems like other things are happening...and resulting in "similar kinds" processes being non-responsive. On several occasions, if I left click on a file, nothing happens and it appears as though everything is normal until I click on the filename again or try to close dialogue box. Then, then a window pops up which says: The application is not responding. The programy may respond again if you wait. The two options are: End process or Cancel. Ending the process leads back to the desktop.

Currently, my system (C:\windows\system32\) contains two files with the names "tosbtshell.dll.old" and "tosbtshell.dll". When I've tried to delete them, the "not responding" dialogue box appears and I'm back to square one. I tried via CMD prompt to delete the ".old" and existing version of "tosbtshell.dll" AND also tried to rename ".old" to "tosbtshell.dll" but got "access is denied" on both occasions.

Next, I booted into SAFE MODE with command prompt and was successful in first deleting then renaming ".old". Alas....errr...same things happening.

ALSO, in examining Bluetooth in Control Panel, I have noticed the following.

    Bluetooth Local COM

    Existing COM Ports:

    Port Description Owner
    Com8 Toshiba BT Port (Com8) LocalCOM-Client
    Com9 Toshiba BT Port (Com9) LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(Toshiba LocalCOM)]
Com10 Toshiba BT Port (Com10) Information Exchanger
Com11 Toshiba BT Port (Com11) Information Exchanger
Com12 Toshiba BT Port (Com12) Information Exchanger
Com13 Toshiba BT Port (Com13) Information Exchanger
Com14 Toshiba BT Port (Com14) Information Exchanger
Com20 Toshiba BT Port (Com20) HSP Manager
Com21 Toshiba BT Port (Com21) HSP Manager
Com22 Toshiba BT Port (Com22) HSP Manager

Do I need all of these? I wonder if I can delete some of these?

    Thanks in advance,

    Blaine

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I need to retain all these? So far I've fiddled with the COM9 when trying to remedy the problem. Any ideas on how to determine/find out what device/service/capability each comm port supports?
