I have been working with chaslang on cleaning up this toshiba laptop for malware issues. There are a few hardware issues chaslang suggested I ask about on this forum.

1.) when using the touchpad it will fairly frequently toggle from full screen to window or visa-versa instead of reacting as expected. IOW if the cursor is over the scroll bar, it is likely to change the window view instead of scrolling when you tap the touch pad. playing solitare, it will toggle the window view instead of moving the playing card the curser is over. I have downloaded the latest drivers from toshiba.

2.) audio is dead. there is an interference icon over the Realtek HD audio component in the systems hardware information. I have uninstalled the driver, rebooted, and reinstalled - still still get error 39. The machine has no audio whatsoever (all internal speakers)

3.) boot time is horrible -somewhere from 13 to 15 minutes. I have tried to scrub the startup - it has not helped much.

    help

    Greetings, john5657.

    1. Have you tried a discrete mouse to see if you get the same symptoms? If the mouse exhibits no strange behavior, then the touchpad must be the culprit.

    2. Many times the chipset driver must first be loaded, then the audio driver. Also, if the machine is running XP SP1 or SP2, there is a Microsoft UAA HD audio patch available.

What is the make and model # of your machine, and what operating system and Service Pack # are you using?

This is a toshiba laptop satellite. A105-s4334
Windows XP media Center Edition Ver 2002
Service Pack 3. All updates current
    Intel Core 2 CPU T5200 @1.6ghz
    1.99GB ram
    148 GB drive

I have not tried a remote mouse. I'll dig one up and try it.

I don't believe I've tried updating the chipset drivers- what is the process to do that?

Chaslang has given it a clean bill of health. It took a few steps to get it cleaned.

    update

I haven't had much time to mess with this thing much. Geeksquad attempted to work on it but said the hard drive was failing. So we bought a new harddrive, cloned it with adonis, and installed the new drive (Western Digital 250 gb). That helped many things - primarily it reduced boot time from over 15 minutes to about 3.

I still have error 39 on the Realtek High Definition Audio, as well as a slew of interference calls on the network devices. The machine has no audio or video capability now.

I have not yet messed with the remote mouse.

No, I did screw up and download it last fall. As part of the malware removal sequence Chaslang (on the malware forum) helped me scrub the thing as best we could and tried to remove it all. It seems that there are still bits and pieces of it about. :(

The laptop is running Norton 360 for AV.

Leftovers AVG coupled with Norton Yikes... and you had malware issues, I would have wiped the OS in a minute and reinstalled...

Your OS is XP Media, is that original to your notebook? or was Vista.

Yes, the XP Media Center edition is original to the laptop. The kids think they bought it new in '05 or '06.

I think an OS wipe is the right thing to do. The kids stuff is mostly in storage - so reinstalling software could get ugly because they don't know for sure where any of the disks are.
Including their original xp disks. darn kids.

A friend of mine is an IT guy at one of the local school districts. He is going to image the disk, load windows 7, and see if the thing is functional. Then we can figure out if we can get all their software etc. together and decide what to do about an OS. Pretty sure they don't want to pay for an upgrade to Windows 7 though.

You could always go Linux: Mint and Ubuntu are a couple of good ones - user friendly with fairly shallow learning curves.

Try one as a live environment, see if you like it. Could also use it as a troubleshooting tool, and as a means to transfer any data from the machine that you wish to salvage.
