So you tried reburning the Vista CD at the slower speed and that did not boot?

Then try the Puppy CD and see if you can boot that. I have a feeling it's the hard drive that is starting to go bad.

Alright, accidently posted this early ha.. still waiting on Puppy to download, will let you know how it goes.

and if the hard drive does go bad..?

You will need to purchase a new drive and also order the recovery disks from Toshiba. It is a nominal charge for the recovery DVD if it is available for your computer which it should be.

Edit: Am signing off till tomorrow. Catch you then.

    Hi,

In Puppy, at the bottom left of the screen should be icons for sda1, sda2 and sda3. Try clicking sda2 and see if you can access your Windows partition. Your personal files would be in Users folder then your User Name folder then the various subfolders. You would be able to copy them to a USB flash drive if you have one.

Yea i was able to move everything that was important. So where do we go from here?

Not sure why, but the Vista Recov Disc felt like loading through, so i'm going to try these.

"Hi, did it find the installation and attempt repairs?

    Try two things:

    1) go the menu of 5 choices and select Startup Recovery from the list and let that run and then try to boot.

If no go then go to the command prompt and try diskpart and do the list volume. (I want to double check that the C: partition is now showing as NTFS in diskpart."

    sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire

Good, do those two specifically the list volume. The winload.exe error still points to either a partition problem or a problem with where the bootmngr is looking for your Windows files. I'd like to rule out a partition problem and because Partition Wizard is weird about the Apply button at the end--I just want to make sure that everything is now NTFS.

It seems strange that MiniXP can't read your C: drive but I believe if Puppy can read it then it must be NTFS but I jsut want to verify that Windows doesn't still see it as RAW.

Alright maybe i spoke too soon. I posted that reply about the Vista Recov Disk loading through. I got a screen away from Selecting the scans/cmd prompt but it got stuck loading. I gave it about 20 minutes, and it was still there, so i just turned off my laptop and tried re-booting. Back at the black screen with moveable cursor. It usually takes about 10 minutes per screen to load through so, i'm not always sure if i should just wait a little longer or if it's stuck.

This is booting from the Disk drive.

So.. how do we get through/around this?

I'm thinking that Vista disc file but not be quite right from that site. Someone else trying to use that keeps get stalled at the Vista splash screen.

I've been looking at the two discs you have running which are Puppy and Hiren's but I haven't found a good program to use to figure out what is going on. Maybe try Hiren's and go to the Command prompt icon then type in Diskpart and do the List Volume. That will tell us if all three partitions are seen as NTFS. It doesn't seem to give the active/system attributes but really I am just interested in whether they are all NTFS.

Take note of the drive letter of the large partition (would be C: but letters will be different) and make sure it is NTFS then type exit to quit diskpart.

    Hey sach2,
Thanks for coming in while I was away. I also thought something might be wrong with that download link. So, I downloaded the 32bit version and burned it. Booted up. It took about 30-40 seconds at the blank desktop before the menu appeared but I was able to progress through to the command prompt. This was on a XP machine.

I was wondering if TestDisk may be the next option. Or, since he has got all of his files, boot puppy and using Gparted, flag the Toshiba restore partition as a boot partition. Should be able to see if the partitions are NTFS after Gparted does it scan of the hard drive. Then reboot and see if the restore partition comes up.

@tgell, yes, it is strange that that disc seems to work a few times and then quit. I downloaded it and one from TPB that is supposed to be the original NeoSmart one and am going to run a MD5 check on them to see if they are the same but that is for later.

I am still curious if Diskpart shows NTFS or RAW just to make sure that it is not a filesystem error. So I hope we can get that info. I'm not sure what that BootSuite 2011 did. And I am only wondering if it set the boot partition to the wrong partition. (Originally I think there was a bootsector problem with the flashing cursor. Then BootSuite was run and we get the Winload error.)
I'd like to be able to run BCDedit to see if under Windows Boot Loader RookieVirusManager's partition is set to the same one Diskpart sees as the Windows partition in list volume. In this picture it shows C: but it can be any letter depending on the HD layout. (On mine the Windows's drive letter is G: in both diskpart and bcdedit--although when running Windows my main drive letter is C:?)I can't figure to how to get that info without BCDedit run out of the recovery environment.

Since he has his files, TestDisk and setting the Toshiba recovery to Active is definitely an option to try out. I'm sure the OP is getting frustrated.

    @RookieVirusWrangler,
I think we should see if you can boot the recovery partition and take it back to a factory state since you have your data transferred. Boot Puppy. In order for us to do any operations on the drive, the drive cannot be mounted. So if your hard drive has a green button on it, right click and select unmount. Then in the menu select System>Gparted Partition Manager.

Let it scan the drive. Can you tell me if the recovery partition (the one that is 1400MB) is shown on the Gparted window?

  14. RookieVirusWrangler

    RookieVirusWrangler Private E-2

    All drives show ntfs,
the 1400mb drive displays Diag under Flags column.
290gb drive displays Boot under Flags column.
and 7gb drive displays Hidden under Flags column.

  15. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Okay,
Now click on the 1400MB partition and in the menu bar select Partition>manage flags.

Then for that partition check the box that says boot. You might want to make sure that the 290GB partition is not marked as boot also. After you have marked the 1400MB partition as boot. Reboot your computer and see if the Toshiba Recovery Manager comes up.

Lol it says BOOTMGR is missing.

Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart.

The second screen i get while re-booting.

  17. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Wow!!
Okay, you can take Gparted and put the boot flag back on the 290GB partition.

I downloaded that Vista System Recovery CD. It worked for me but since I have XP, i could only get to the command prompt. The other options were not available. The MD5 signature on the iso I downloaded is

    AFF5CEEF6DBF202CC1BEB9FC81E8D02B

Can you use a MD5 utility to check the signature on your iso? Is it the same?

  18. RookieVirusWrangler

Alright. The code matches yours. And also changed the drives back.

One more thing. When you pressed the zero key while you powered on the computer, did you keep it pressed until the machine beeped.

Here is the sequence for Toshiba computers.

    • Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.
    • When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.
    • When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.
    • Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.
    • Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.
    • Click Next to Start recovery.

If you did, and it still did not boot, the only thing I can think of trying next would be testdisk. You will burn the iso and boot to that. First read the step by step instruction to get an idea of what it is about. If this does not work then the only other option is to buy the disk from Toshiba. I think they are about $20-$30.

    Hi,

    One thought:

There is the third partition 7gb hidden which is most likely the recovery partition. I would change the flags for that by unchecking hidden and checking Boot.

See if that one will boot.

Alright man, it's running. So what's after this?

  22. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

Thanks sach2. I did not think about that. 7GB for a Vista recovery partition makes more sense.

  23. tgell

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

I am curious if you got it running by flagging the 7gb partition as boot per sach2's suggestion or by the zero key.

Yea sorry didn't see his suggestion. It's a bit late for that now. Went on with the Toshiba Recov.

I believe the scan was just interrupted,

    An error has occured.

    ERROR: 10-FC12-0231

    Recovery Error.
Please press [OK] to turn off the computer.

I just got BSOD 'd.. lol.

Alright, i don't have the winload.exe error anymore. It basically just restarts the system everytime I try booting safe mode. The second screen automatically goes to boot selections. And Booting regular gives me a BSOD, then it restarts.

    So, where too?

Alright guys... seriously that site is painful. I miss how personal you take our problems and seem to truly care about helping all of us (tgell, sach2, and chaslang especially). He's been handing out some pretty mediocre advice, sometimes just telling me what needs to be done but not exactly how, wasting about 3-4 hours waiting for a reply on how. lol. And he's also been telling me to just keep re-trying the vista start up repair as it doesn't always work the first time. I'm 0 for 10 with this thing.

My password keeps getting fuxxed up aswell every time i try to log in, i have to keep going into my email where it tells me it's been changed and i have to reset it.

Is there really nothing more you guys can do? I'll post the link for you to know what all has done, which isn't much.
He hasn't mentioned much about a BSOD, but i'm sure he's troubleshooting to get past one. Anyway.
I really hope you guys can think of something.

But I can understand, this is literally THE perfect virus. I almost have a feeling it was governmental to destroy those who DL torrents. My computer is completely wrecked from this thing, or so it seems.

Did you try another restore using Toshiba's Recovery Manager. If you did and received another error, I would recommend that you boot Hirens and use the Toshiba diagnostic software to see if you have a hardware problem. Toshiba has used Fujitsu drives but I am not sure if you have that. You might want to look at the drive. There are two utilities that you can try.

    Toshiba Hard Disk Diagnostic 2.00b

    Fujitsu HDD Diagnostic Tool 7.00

Both are in the Dos tools section of Hirens. If you find that the drive is okay, then I would suggest you order the recovery disks. These would have to be ordered anyway if you get a new drive.

    https://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/serviceUnitVerification.jsp

I am not sure of the exact amount but I do not think it is over $30.

Note: I tried to google that error code of ERROR: 10-FC12-0231 and got nothing. The closest code was a hard drive error.

Edit: another option would be to install a linux distro like mint, but I am could not give much help if you went that route.
