So my advent is a right off because of my/daughters stupidity turns out not only has the h/d failed and needs replacing but I never made a back up and the key for the legitamate xp download has worn off the back of the notebook.

So my ex has said ..hey I have a couple of laptops that need a little work, get them both going and you can have one for free..she's shrewd that one.

So first one an old Toshiba satellite 1800 series with xp model number s1800-814

I can't find the wifi setting to get wifi..she only remembers it ever being hardwired lan I think she had this tail end of 2001..also sometimes when it's on a long time...it just turns off

    secondly

Compaq presario r3000 that she had after the toshiba..I think the backlight is out,,as it shows a black screen after start up and on start up the colour is very amber..after start up the screen goes black but tilt it slightly and you can see in the shadows the screen...I've been told this is a backlight failure and it's a simple fix? but also on this one the mouse pad will not work as i try to use the pad and no movement.

I know these faults may not seem biggies to the more informed but at the momment I can't afford new so if I can re-love them and give them life two happy people will be ..well happy

    Any ideas Guys?

For the Compaq, it could just be a loose cable , although it may well be the backlight- Ebay is about the only place to get them , as it is an old model- but they were quite good.
To check the cable, I can run you through it, in general terms, but before unscrewing, or, removing anything, you need to remove the battery.

Sorry to show my ignorance and lack of knowledge Backlogic but thank you

As the tosh won't connect to the internet through wifi I pressume you mean hard wire it to the internet to get the wifi settings?

Go to this site to see what needs doing- so that you can understand the innards of the laptop- this is a very useful site--
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba1800/satellite1800_1.htm
Steps 1 to 10 on first page- then if you look at that last picture on the page , you will see the lead in the middle coming down from the screen to the motherboard. That is the screen cable.
The next step will be to remove the trim around the screen. If memory serves me right, as on most laptops, the screws are covered with a little black plastic sticky dot. you will probably find one in each corner, and possibly one/two next to the lid fastening catch.
The screen itself is usually fixed by screws in the sides of the screen, and the invertor, and backlight are connected from the bottom- if it is just a loose cable, it will be fixed behind the screen into the back of the screen-
STILL WANT TO DO IT ?

You can download the file to another laptop/computer, and save it, then copy to a usb stick, or burn to a cd, and then transfer it to the laptop

By hard wire, I would say, if no other way, or, laptop, then using the internal modem though your telephone connection- I used to do this through mine if no ethernet connection, and use a pay as you go dialup to get it on line. Easier if you have an ethernet cable, and can plug into a router
