Today I ran adaware and it picked up crypt.xpack.gen I told it to remove it. I scanned 2 more times with adaware it said it wasn't there but sent suspicious files to Threatworks (adaware). I then ran Norton 360 which picked up nothing. Based on what I am reading I am willing to bet it is still there somewhere. How do I get rid of this? I might add I am not to computer literate and am going to need to be walked through this.

Also, I did online banking today and used my credit card. I'm a little worried about that since I read up on this virus. I need help getting rid of this.

    Thanks!!

    Suzanne :cry

    Hi there and welcome.

You re-named a Combofix log as MBM... I still need the log from running MBAM (Malware Bytes) Attach that for me into your next post please. :)

    Thanks

Can you tell me where exactly adaware found this "threat"? Because your logs are clean. I would say to get rid of adaware as it is not very effective any more.

FYI: It is a bad idea to make all users admin!!

    1. If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    2. Please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following softwares:

Viewpoint Media Player <-- as per requested in step 1 of the R&R
Ad-Aware <-- this program is not as effective as SUPERantispyware or Malware Bytes that you downloaded during the R&R
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7 <-- outdated

    3. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4. Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    5. Please use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following remnants from Registry Mechanic which you no longer have installed:

    Delete the bold folder:

    6. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    and finally...

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much for your help with this!! I can't tell you exactly where the threat was found because the Dell representative cleared the statistics for the day it was found and I can't export the log. I haven't a clue why he did that, I guess he figured it he deleted it I would forget it was there. I am attaching a new Malwarebytes report. All subsequent scans from Malwarebytes and SAS are clean. Not the case for the Lavasoft one though, it keeps sending threatworks files.

All steps are complete except number 7 Disable System Restore point. I am embarassed to say I don't know where to look for the READ ME for Windows to find out how to do this. I am running Windows XP.

I did suggest to you that it would be a much better idea to uninstall Adaware and for you to use MBAM and SAS instead. I do not rate adaware too highly anymore and I uninstalled it from my machine LONG ago.

    Refer to:
    Step 4: Toggle System Restore

    safe surfing! :)

    Last question,

I think it was when I installed Combofix, something made a recovery console. When I turn my pc on it goes to a screen that says "Please select the operating system to start.
    Microsoft recovery console
    Windows XP

    Use up down arrows, etc."

It does this before the Windows screen loads. Is it ok that it is there?

Yes, :) it's fine that it's there.. it is your choice, but if you ever do crash it will be easier to restore your system if the recovery console is installed.

I just want to add that the file Symdlmgr.dll was the file that was being sent to threatworks (adaware) I don't know if that is something to be concerned about because it is still on my pc. I am using Malwarebytes now and it doesn't detect any threats. Just wanted you opinion.

    Thank you again!!

I see the following listed in your uninstall list:

It is not malware, and as I have mentioned I personally wouldn't bother with adaware.
