Hi all...I'm currently connected to a remote PC trying to figure out why they have a slow down on our application every day between 11 and 2. I'm running a tracert right now and am finding that the times are being returned fairly quickly (all times are <10ms) but the IP addresses can take up to 10 seconds to come up - I'm wondering if this could be part of the problem? What does resolving the name of the IP have to do with connectivity and speed? I know really nothing about this, i'm literally learning on the fly, so any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

What application are you talking about?
Also, if the time between 11 and 2 are peak hours where theres a lot of people on your network, that can cause the network to slow down a bit too. Thats something to consider as well.

Hi KingSteve, it's a third party application built specifically for my company used by many other groups that don't have speed issues. As I said the slow down is everyday between 11 and 2, and they are the only group experiencing the issues which makes me think there is something specific to their building.

Just with that app or is it a network wide performance issue?

There are a lot of things that can effect network speed. Not knowing what kind of app youre using or what it does exactly is kind of hard to say whats going on. If the app is just a stand alone piece of software that doesnt use any network resources at all, you might have to call their support. But if its something that uses the network to function, you should take note of whats going on on the network at those times. If theres a lot of people on the network, like i said it can definitely effect that performance.

Also, if youre running tracert internally and its taking 10 seconds for the hops, theres definitely something wrong on your network. Again, hard to say what exactly since i dont know how the network is set up.

    Hey KingSteve...
The application does use network resources; however, the group that's experiencing the slowdown passes a relatively small amount back and forth from the server, and the groups that pass large amounts of data are not. I am doing the tracert from one of the PCs in the group having problems to my application's server; there are 8 hops, and as soon as the tracert hits Hop #2, the IP addresses are delayed in coming up. This delay lasts up to and including Hop #6. The last two hops (7 and 8) are within the server farm and don't have any lag.

To provide a little more detail on the app, it's a C#.NET 2.0 built front end, with a SQL Server 2000 backend running on a Win2K3 server.
As far as Support, it's me. I am the front line for the user group; I then have to test, troubleshoot, establish root cause and then if it's application related, refer it to my development team. If it's not, I have to refer it to my Server Admin who is very, very hard to track down.
Let me know if you need further info.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Think you can copy over the output of tracert? PM if you want to.
Also, is that software client/server type software? App server still on site? 8 hops is a lot for a small network.
