In my household i have two computers. one of them is older and has alot of music files on it and i wanted to know how i could transfer them to my new computer without having to burn all of it onto cd's. i have heard of FTP but i have no idea as of how to do it. I am alright when it comes to using DOS aswell.

Does anyone know how you do this crap?

    Thanx

Take out HD with music on and attach it as a slave ( temporary ) in the other PC and transfer the music that way then put back in other PC.

I have 3 small old HDs ranging in size from 6.4gb to 10gb and use them for transfering data from my main PC to the other ones also use oone for a clone of a clean installof XP with SP1 installed saves re-installing it all again.

I know GLS very SAD but I hate wasting time, if something goes arse-up I will try for a day to cure it but in the end I just plug in the spare HD, use a recovery cd, and copy the nice clean clone of my XP install with all registry tweaks done!

I just looked at one of the other HDs and it has all my downloaded updates and other free or paid for software on as a backup.

i had to do the same thing with regards to transferring my mp3 files... i simply bought a cross-linking cable for like $10 and hooked it up to the ethernet ports of both computers... then you make a few simple adjustments to your IP address in Network Neighborhood and you can get your computers on the same network to allow for the file transfer... goes very quickly...

try the Networking forum for advice on how to get your computers to recognize eachother on the same Network... also, i believe that windows XP has a Network Connection Wizard that will automatically configure this for you...

I am kinda in the same boat.Something was said that has been on my mind for awhile.I have two machines not connected with the same OS (XP Pro)and was wondering how I could email to myself from one machine to the other.I have them both configured to the same username.Maybe I should just find out and mail myself a letter....would that be spam? NG

i transferred over 8 GB's of mp3's when i did this... you can buy different length crosslinking cables if the computers will be set up near eachother or what not... but don't you just want everything from your old computer on your new one? this is probably the best way to do it im my opinion... all you'll have to do is drag and drop you entire mp3 collection and then just be patient and let the transfer take place....

i don't think having 2 different OS's really matters... when i did my transfer it was XP Home on one computer and Windows '98 on the other...

    Wellllll....that's truly a Great Geek Suggestion....aaand
the best one I have heard in awhile....innovative and saves all the cleanup with reusing the same HD! I like it and I'm
    gonna do it! ;)

    One never knows :p
