I have a desktop computer and want to transfer files to a laptop
Should I just put everything on a jump drive then move download the drive to the laptop
    OR
can I set up some wire from desktop and drag/drop to laptop?
if so, how would I do that?

If they both connect to your network, you can setup sharing and drag and drop or copy and paste that way. But sharing introduces security issues.

If not talking too many files, I would just use a thumb/USB drive to move them.

Copy first ; never move. Why?
If there is a glitch (I've had the power go out unexpectedly on a perfectly fine day) then the file being moved is lost. If you copy and there is a glitch, you still have the original file and can copy again. Make sure all the files copied open correctly. Once you are sure, then you can delete/remove/erase the files on the desktop PC.

Good point. In fact, it is probably best to just plan on keeping all copies. One backup is not enough.

Exactly what I told my 72-year old friend. And she's not lost a single file.
