Transfer OS From IDE to SATA?

At ease men:major Question ... can I transfer both XP Pro and Win7 from a IDE drive to a SATA drive and still have both OS function properly?:confused rolleyes Thanks for reading my post. :wave

 

If XP and 7 are already on the same drive I would think that cloning the drive would work to any type of drive, SATA, SAS, or SCSI and maybe even a SSD as long as you have both interfaces on a machine to do the task.

 

Agreed with shnerdly - for the most part, IDE and SATA are data transport protocols. The drives' file system types (NTFS, etc.) stay the same, and that's where the operating systems must operate...

Thanks for the response :wave... so I just can't transfer the files I have to get a cloning program and do it that way? If so are there any good freeware programs out there? rolleyes:confused

 

I've used Partition Wizard to do it.

I then have a backup drive so I can be a bit fearless about resizing partitions. If it fails (and it hasn't for me), I can just put the old drive back in and start over.

 

I've used XXClone with success. It's shareware and reasonable easy to use.
