How do I transfer my program files from the old drive to the new. I have my hard drive wiped out clean but before that, all the files have been transferred temporarily to another hd and then back to mine. It is now on my desktop (icon) but I don't know exactly how to put them back. I forgot to ask the guy who did it for me. I could just install the programs again but there's so many of them (and one very important is the Norton Anti-Virus).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It really depends on what was transferred, how, what format and what program was used.

The icon on your desktop, what are it's attributes as in what is it's name and extension?

    What is your operating system?

What were the programs that were backed up etc?

I clicked on the Properties and it showed:

    Type: File Folder
    Location: C:\ Documents and Settings\Username\Desktop
    Size: 6.75 GB
    Size on disk: 6.8 GB
    Contains: 29,931 Files, 27,670 Folders
    Created: Yesterday, April 30, 2005, 1:32:06 PM
    Attributes: Read only (ticked)

Then when I clicked on the Advanced button, it showed a dialog box where the box for For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this folder is ticked under Archive and Index Attributes.

I hope this is what you wanted to know...

BTW, my OS is WindowsXP. Thanks!

Looks like it is just a folder. What is inside the folder?
You might have to reinstall the programs.

That's exactly what I'm thinking right now even if I will painstakingly reinstall all the programs one by one if I don't get hold of this guy sometime soon. Anyway, thanks for your replies and have a good day!

Programs will not work by just coping the folders, they have to be registered into the OS(new system files and reg values are added while installing).

Also, there must have been a reason why you wiped your hardisk clean, which makes it all the more important that you install the programs fresh.

Makes sense to me now, just reinstall everything under the new OS...

The reason why I had to do a big "clean-up" on my hd is because my partner installed a pirated Windows XP Pro while I was away. The hd was infested with millions of virus and the only way was to wipe it out. But when he couldn't find the original cd to reinstall it, he asked a friend to help but the bugger installed an illegal copy. When it was time for Microsoft to automatically install on all PCs the SP2 on April 12, my system went ballistic and nothing seem to be working. Hence, the big clean up.
