Hey, I have a bunch of Cassettes that I'd like to have on CD. Is there any way of transferring data from Cassette to CD?

    Thanks :)

You would need a sound card that allows you to do 'Line-In", then you should be able to record it. Only problem is, you will probably notice a lot of hiss and noise if they are well used.

That looks good though I live inthe UK and havn't seen anything like that. Plus, it looks like a lot of money

What would I connect to the line-in? Would a Cassette Walkman work?

    Thanks

i see what you are saying, at $180 you would have to have a lot of cassettes to get your money's worth. nevertheless a cool looking little toy though

Well, with some work, you should be able to connect either a line-out on your walkman, or the headphone jack and insert into your line-in on your sound card. Also, I'd be sure to check the sound levels via any software you are using. You don't want to turn up the walkman full blast, or else you will have distortion to deal with.

Do a google search for " audacity ".

It's a great free program that you can use to save your audio cassette stuff to cds. I used it successfully with several cassettes.
Plug your cassette audio device into your soundcard, and you can import the audio into audacity, where you can make any modifications you want in terms of raising, lowering audio, filters, editing, etc.. then export to your hard drive as a wav file, where you can then burn to a cd.

Ive see that places before and it would be a really cool thing to have but in all honesty it is a waste of space and money for your pc tower. The chances are that once you use it to convert your tapes it will never be used again.

Thanks for the opinions and suggestions.

I've downloaded Audiocity. Only problem now is what cable I need to connect the walkman's headset jack to the Line-In? What are they called?

I have one but have no idea what they are called but if you go into any electrical store they will have them either on the shelf for you to pick up or you can describe them.

"A cable with two headphone plugs on either side"

Did a bit of research and if you want to get technical in the store you can go to the cashier.
'Can i have a cable with 2 1/8" plugs on either side please' but they are likely to just go What?

Broken Arrows is correct, it's 1/8 (mini, i believe), you just need two male ends. most electronics stores should have them. if you have store bought cassettes, and you don't have an aftermarket sound card, then it might not sound that good. if you get a sound card (like sblive), and use it, you'll get a little better sound out of them (recordings). i have been slowly copying my records (dance music from the late 80's and early 90's) to cassette and then to my computer, and i'd be willing to bet anyone who heard them, that they wouldn't be able to tell what the source was (unless you heard a pop, or scratch). anyway, the better the equipment (playback), and your sound card, the better the results!! ;) down here you can get a soundblaster live (64bit) sound card for $20 or so plus tax. - sos

Make sure you get a stereo cable, too. They make mono ones, and those will only give you the left or the right channel.

After two weeks I finally got the cable. It is a 3.5mm Dubbing Cable that works when I hook one end into a walkman and the other end in the comps line-in.

Now, I don't know how to record onto Audiocity as suggested by barnburner. Anyone know how please? I also have Cool Edit Pro 2 which i've tried but no joy...

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys :)

I use audicity for this very purpose all the time. There is a drop down bar on it, which needs to be set for "line-in." Once that is set, click the record button and hit the play button on your walkman. You should see the audio waves forming on the program. If not, stop both and go to your PC's audio/volume controls. This is located here: Start -> Programs - > Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control. Here you can make sure the mute is not on and adjust the vloume of the sound coming in through your line-in.

Trex06. Thank you! :) I have hundreds of tapes that would have been tossed out. I was going to buy & download my favorite song(s) from each tape & make CD's & MP3 files, so this is
