I was wondering if it is possible to transfer software from one hard drive to another as I have lost the installation CD.

Would I be able to simply copy and paste the program files for that piece of software???????????

is possible long as the other hard drive got windows in it and make sure theres enough extra space to do so.xp over xp, or 98 over 98

Would it then be possible to carry on using the software, after removing the other hard drive?????????

No..you have to have the installers/CD's so the programs can be properly installed on the new hard drive. Simply copying the folders to the new hard drive does not create all the necessary registry entries, register & install the proper dll's etc. in order for the programs to work.

Is there any reliable third party software which may be able to do so??

You could clone the drive by purchasing Acronis True Image or a similar program from our backup downloads. Any one of these such programs would allow you to create a backup of everything on the drive and transfer it in working order to the new drive providing the hardware is the same.
