Transferring WinXP

I recently have found that my XP drive is beginning to fail, likely because of the current heat wave here. Which means that I'm currently stuck with 98. While getting a new drive isn't a problem, I've lost my XP CD, so reinstalling isn't an option.

Since I do have 98, which cannot even see the NTFS drive with XP, can anyone tell me how I can transfer the contents of the old drive onto the new one?

And incase anyone suggests an upgrade to Vista, I'm afraid it would cause my computer to do this: :cry

 

I ran across this program while using Windows 98, it might help in your situation, but as it is read only, and requires some configuration, it might not. Have a look and see what you think.

Bug

 

Are you using NTFS or FAT format? You can get a live OS such as Linux Knopex and access the files that way. If you have a second computer it becomes a network issue.

There's also Ubuntu. It's a FREE Linux based (Windows type) Operating System. It "sees" and works with MS NTFS (Windows 2000, XP, NT 4x, NT 5x) DELL is now selling/shipping some of their systems with it pre-installed. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2135922,00.asp

There are a couple of windows apps it won't run, but it's a great thing to have. Just make a bootable CD with the ISO image. If XP etc fails to start, or gets completely hosed, any files which are intact can be retrieved with it. You can load/run a "cloning" application to transfer your bad drive files to a new drive (if the problem isn't sector related. You don't want to transfer bad sector data).

That's a good tool offered by Studiot.
If you clone to another hard drive, Maxtor/Seagate had this facility, in free hard disk tools.
But a free download like this one will enable you to copy your hard drive to a new, and even different size hard drive.
