That's crazy. I hope the deer actually was okay. They often get up just to go die somewhere else from internal stuff.

For anyone that doesn't live in areas where deer roam around, what that video shows is exactly what happens. We have hundreds of them around our area and you have to be so careful driving at night. They literally come out of no where and hitting them is like hitting an immovable object. The weigh a ton and you feel it. Your car also feels it as they cause a huge amount of damage.

    Believe it or not...
It was on South African TV news tonight.
While I love meat, I hope that deer did not go and die slowly in pain.

The deer in my neighborhood have started getting "smart". I was driving home one night, I live on a rural dark road without a streetlight for miles, and instead of the deer running or bolting and skating across the street it just stood there and kept grazing without a care.

That was a few years ago, and I see it more and more often.

This happens all the time in my area . . . gets worse the further south you go (toward Hoosier National Forest). Wife hit one a few years back on a state highway - did over $1500.ooUS in damage to her Optima. The deer in that case had to be put down; My city has a call list and deer-kill tags, so the carcass was not wasted. Gotta be careful . . . many times car/deer collisions are not only fatal for the deer.

    So true.
In some parts of South Africa the Greater Kudu is a serious threat to motorists. The male can weigh 600-700 pounds and can easily jump a 6-7 feet fence.

It never happens to me, and there's a million deer in the woods near me. But I unlike others keep my eyes open for them every time I pass through the woods in my car or on my motorcycle.

There has always been a lot of deer in our area but in the last few years it seems to of gotten much bigger. Almost every one we know, including most of my family,
has either hit or been hit by a deer causing lots of damage to vehicles and sadly some serious injuries.

My brother lives in a forest area within the Dandenong Ranges where Sambar deer are quite common but because of extensive hunting they rarely go near roads. In fact the deer almost never go near humans and often the hunters have to track them for several days on foot through country inaccessible to most vehicles before they see any deer at all.
Kangaroos on the other hand are every where especially at either dusk or dawn and at 6 feet high they do considerable damage to cars. Kangaroos hop quite fast (at up to 40 mph) and often run beside cars then overtake and hop in front and then try to stop or they try to leap over the bonnet (hood for americans) of a passing vehicle. Kangaroos almost always die when hit by vehicles.

Probably the biggest surprise over here are wombats because although they aren't very big animals, they are very solid and very heavy for their size and often when hit by cars they cause wheels and suspension to be completely torn from the vehicle rendering the vehicle undrivable. Often when wombats are hit they just run off as they are very tough animals due to all their internal organs being protected by very thick layers of tough muscle then enclosed by a very tough hide.

Well my feeling is if you hit any animal on the road, due to your carelessness I hope they total your car or if a hoof happens to go through your windshield and nail you in the face, jolly good show. Especially if you thought you could get away with texting at the time. :D

I have seen a deer go from standing still to bolting into the side of a car as it was passing by. Fairly good speed on a dirt road. What was the deer thinking?

Wow! Obviously you do not understand deer dart out in front of you at night before you even have time to see them or react they come up out of ditches along the road in a flash and sadly some people around have been killed by the deer coming through the windshield. No one wants to intentionally hit a deer with a vehicle!

Have a friend whose sister and brother n law were trailering two Harleys to a shop when struck by a deer. Wrecked the truck two bikes and the trailer. Now they might be wanting to strike a few - with something other than their truck.

Which is why I keep my speed down when cruising through places populated with deer and unlike others keep my eyes open for them. People are just plain careless when cruising through these places. The only thing that will save most of them is when more cars come equipped with auto braking.
