    Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with what I believe is a Trojan, although I think this may have been removed (check logs) and a re-direct virus. Firefox and IE both re-direct from google.
Since this has happened I have also had various crashes and the odd Blue screen, I've been sitting at my desk trying to pull my hair out for the past few days!

Any help provided would be much appreciated. I have followed the cleaning procedures and attached the logs.

Unfortunately the combofix download isn't working, so this step hasn't been used.

    Thanks again

    Ed

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have an MBR infection. We will need to boot to the Recovery Console to remove this infection. You will need your Windows XP CD to boot to the RC.

Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

After running the fixmbr command and boot back to normal mode, continue with the below.

Now let's try the beta version of ComboFix which is named KittyFix.exe

Download ComboFix from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/KittyFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Note: This is a beta version of combofix and might be unstable but tests done so far have proved it works well

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer.
    • Now Exit/Close/Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running.
    • Double click on kittyfix.exe & follow the prompts.
      • If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?" Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please attach the "C:\ComboFix.txt" to your next message.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi chaslang,

Many thanks for your help. It has been very clear and concise even for a fairly average computer user like me.

My computer seems to be running a lot better now, and as yet has not crashed or gone to the BsOD.
The redirects on google are still happening, although instead of redirecting to a page it simply states that 'the page cannot be found'. Which i somewhat of an improvement.

I have attached the logs below.

    Thanks

    Ed

Did you setup all those FeatureControls on IE? See the ComboFix log if you don't know what I mean. It is a feature of IE. See this:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537184(VS.85).aspx

ComboFix is back online now, so download the new version from here combofix.exeand save it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet. We will run it below.

Please run another scan with Malwarebytes. Make sure you update it before running the scan. Attach the new log.

Please put your PC into Normal Startup mode with MSconfig as requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME FIRST cleaning procedure.

Then run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

If still having redirection problems, answer the below:

Does this happen in both IE and FireFox?
Does it happen with every search link you click?
Does it happen in safe mode?

    Hi again.

As far as I know i did not setup those feature controls on ie. I have always used mozilla for as long as I can remember, so I've no idea what they are.

I've done all the scans, which were no problem. Apart from the 1st time I ran combofix, it crashed during the creation of the log. I did it a second time and it ran perfectly fine.
    I've attached the logs below.

Redirection is not happening now, either in safe mode, ie, or firefox.

Thanks for your help so far!

Do you think it's clear now at all? The computer hasn't Blue screened, or crashed as of yet (apart from combofix).

    Thanks

    ed

They are okay. I never saw them before in a ComboFix log. They only appear because the keys were locked and they are not problems.

Hmmm! Are you sure? After a couple reboots and trying both browsers again?? Some in ComboFix in the area under the Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer section is a little bit concerning and I'm wondering if a new file is now being used for the infection.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

As far as I can see it isn't happening again, the computer has been rebooted a few times but I'll certainly give it several more shots when I can.

I'm actually away until the first few days of January due to the festive season, but I will do everything you recommend as soon as I get back. The computer won't be switched on until then.

Thanks for your help Chaslang, I'll post the logs up as soon as I can. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New year in the mean time! :)

Hello, and a happy new year! I hope you enjoyed the festive period.

I got back and turned my computer on, everything seemed ok, although when I did a restart the first time, Explorer wouldn't shut down and it had to be done manually with the prompt when it asked me. Other than that, I have tried several restarts in the past 45 minutes or so, in safe mode and normally, and there have been no further re-direct issues or problems that I can see.

I also ran TDSS Killer as you requested and have attached the log.

    Thanks

    Ed

You're welcome & Happy NY! The TDSSkiller log was clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Many, many thanks Chaslang!

My computer is running perfectly at the moment and I have had no further problems.
I've run through the above steps and will try and set up my computer as suggested to prevent this happening again.

    Thanks again.

    (A very happy) Ed
