Hi this is my first post here, and this trojan has been driving me crazy. I can remove it with Spyware Doctor with AV (in safe-mode with networking), but after a re-start it comes right back.
Adaware; Spybot Search and Destroy; super Anti-Malware; and Malwarebytes won't work either.
This is a new machine and it should be very clean. I am also a fan of regular maintenance.
If the trojan runs on start-up it screws up all my E-mail and net-working settings.
    Any help would be appreciated.......rcguy47.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Before I send you off to do our full cleaning procedure, let me first ask where the infection is being found. If it is reporting that it is in System Volume Information then it is in System Restore which is why it would not be getting fixed. System Restore cannot be cleaned. You have to disable System Restore and then reenable it to remove old restore points. That is the only way to clean things in System Restore.

Thanks chaslang; I removed all old restore points as you suggested and also deleted all the scan history and registry back-ups too. Just to be safe.
Since then all scans show a clean PC, but I still am having a problem with the internet connection. The connection is lost periodically and after recycling the modem and router it's back up.
I haven't noticed any unusual processes running. Does XP with servicepack #3 have any networking bugs?
If you want to see any logs, let me know. and should I try some cleaning tools?
I also have a licenced Registry Mechanic.
    Thanx ...rcguy47

Unknown about SP3 issues. You would be better off asking this in the Software Forum. Your problems do not sound like malware if power cycling the external hardware is fixinig it.

You can run our cleaning procedures which I will give below, but I don't think your problem is malware.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Hi again chas;

Things look good now, ran the 'READ THIS AND RUN ME FIRST' and all scans are clean.

I installed ThreatFire from PCTools, hopefully this will prevent this kind of trojan downloader.

Do you think MS firewall is good enough by it's self?

    OK....Happy Blogging....rcguy47

    You're welcome.

No! As you will read in the link in my final instructions given below.

Now we need to cleanup some items from running ComboFix.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significan amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi again ...
    Tried every thing- no luck.

This is one nasty trojan, it was 'removed' from my PC dozens of times and then after a reboot, taadaa it's back.

Now my games are not saving properly, especially SimCity4, (I know... pretty geeky)

Anyway; thinking about a complete format and re-install, and getting McAfee or Norton. What do you suggest?

I suggest that you do what I originally requested in message # 4 and this time attach the logs we ask for. Otherwise there is nothing I can do for you. You stated in message # 5 that everything was fine.

    Hi Chasling

Sorry about the mix up, I thought if the scans come out clear that the logs were not needed.

I did all the cleaning procedures and everything worked fine but the
next startup scan (with SpywareDoctor) showed the same trojan.

I then uninstalled SpywareDoc and installed Kaspersky 2009.
The scan found a "Backdoor.IRC.Flood" it was removed.

Since then I scan clean with everything.

Also for some reason the MGtools logs wouldn't save properly.

If this problem is repaired than you can close this thread, if not repaired I can start a new one.
    thanks for the time ...rcguy

You are the one that has to tell us whether you are having problems or not. ;) If you are not having anymore malware problems then we are finished and you should make sure you have finished my final instructions.
