trojan downloader small

I'm running AVG anti-virus and every couple of days it pops up with a message that it has detected a "trojan_downloader_small_24KB" or something very similar. AVG proceeds to remove the trojans but it will pop up again in a couple of days sometimes several times in a day. I have also noticed other odd behavior recently: poor performance and an inability to install some programs.

I'm running winXP pro. In safe mode I ran the bite defender scan. It found three items that it removed but gave me a message that my system was still infected. I was unable to successfully download the definition files for the RAV scan. I have also run the CCleaner, SpyBot and AdAware. The spyware cleaner found a few small items. I also ran the online Trojan scan which didn't find much and did not solve my problems.

    What next?

The steps are always the same. Always start by running ALL the steps in the READ ME FIRST sticky. Sounds like you only ran some of them.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem, boot into normal mode and make sure you follow these directions:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I have run all of the steps. Very little was found. I ran the on-line scanners twice and the second time nothing was found. The spyware programs only found minor issues (and of course the DSO exploit). However I still get the AVG notice poping up a couple of times a day. Shredder and kill to me found nothing as did the stinger.

    Attached is the hijackthis log.

Why do you say and of course DSO exploit? What version of Spybot are you running? And what is the date of your detections update?

    Do you have CYBERsitter installed?

Well I needed answers before continuing but I guess you missed my messages before signing off.

My question about CyberSitter was because of these lines:

    C:\WINDOWS\Cyb2k.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C2K] C:\WINDOWS\Cyb2k.exe

You should look in Add/Remove programs and uninstall Daily Weather Forecast.
As far as I know it contains malware. So unless you know different, uninstall it.

Run HijackThis and have it fix the below items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {206E52E0-D52E-11D4-AD54-0000E86C26F6} - C:\PROGRA~1\FRESHD~1\FRESHD~1\fdcatch.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXDllRegExe] dxdllreg.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Daily Weather Forecast] C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\weather.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)

Let me know where things stand now.

If my previous messages do not help, do the below.

    - run CCleaner again before doing the below

Download this trial version of Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will have a window come up. One of the buttons on the left is to Update. Click the Update button.and then Start the Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • After it completes the update, click the Scanner button

Now exit Ewido. Now print the below instructions or save them locally because I want you do have no browsers opened and also have no connection to the internet (unplug your cable) while doing the below.

Okay, reboot into safe mode and follow the steps below. (If you have any problems at all trying to get into safe mode to complete these steps, just run them in normal boot mode and make sure you tell me when you come back.)

Open up Ewido and do the following:

    • Click on Scanner
    • Then click Settings
    • Under What to Scan? Select Scan every file
    • Then click OK
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will start.
    • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files that are infected. Leave the defaults selections (to Remove and backup) and click OK. To save yourself some time, you can select Perform action with all infections and then click OK. With the option to scan every file, a lot of cookies will be removed.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop or anyplace you will be able to find it to upload here.
Reboot into normal mode and reconnect to the internet.

Come back here and post the Ewido Scan Report .

Yes I do have CyberSitter installed (more on that later).

I used hijack this to fix the items you selected.
Daily Weather Forecast did not show up in add/remove programs so it was only selected in hijack this.
I ran Ewido security in safe mode with networking turned off (wireless here no cable to disconnect).

I have noticed lately that CyberSitter is doing more that just preventing visits to unwanted websites. It sometimes interferes with certain port connections. It has also prevented downloads to Rav Antivirus and it prevented installation of the Ewido security update. Once it was shut off I had no problems. Any idea what is going on here? CyberSitter is only set to filter websites for ual content.

I now have several pieces of software running to dealwith spyware, malware, virus etc. I don't want to clutter up too much cpu or encourage conflicts. What should I keep? Can/should I get rid of eTrust Pest Patrol? Do I need ewido and AVG?

The ewido scan report is too large to upload (487K). Also ewido seems to be blocking my local network connections and I could not upload to your site unless I turn off the active protection.

I cut down the ewido report to just show anything that was not obviously a cookie.

I used to have norton antivirus installed. It had a feature to protect deleted items. Although I deleted norton antivirus it looks like this feature is still alive and holding on to a lot of junk (mostly cookies). It shows up as /recyler/nprotect Is this a leftover from Norton and if so is there any way to get rid of it?

Did you run CCleaner just before running Ewido as requested? It should have removed cookies.

Wireless does have a cable to disconnect! It's at the other side of your router where you connect to your physical connection.

You did not answer my question about Spybot?

See if this will get rid of the rest of your Norton stuff: Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

You do not need Ewido unless you want to buy it after 15 days. Did you purchase Etrust?
You must keep AVG because you need an antivirus application. You are missing somethings that you need. For one a real software firewall. See: How to Protect yourself from malware!

I did run cc cleaner just before but I'm running xp pro and I think it only gets what is in the current account.

    My spybot is version 1.3
Yes I did purchase e-trust but I regularly use spybot and ad-aware.

As far as firewalls: I kept having strange lockups with the zone alarm free edition. My son who does a lot of mmp games (like world of warcraft) had conflicts with the sygate firewall. I will try sygate again and just have him turn it off before he plays.

    What else am I missing?
You didn't answer my questions about Cybersitter.
How do I get spyware blaster to load at startup?

If you are running Spybot 1.3 you did not follow the steps in the READ ME FIRST correctly. It tells you to check against the versions in our links and to get updates. Spybot has been on 1.4 for some time now.

Firewalls must not be turned off while on line. So if you son is having problems playing online, configure the firewall properly so he can play the game (talk to the game company).

Once installed SpywareBlaster does not need to be run at startup. You only need to run it to get updates. The protection it adds does not have a running process once added. Similar to using Spybot's Immunize (it is not a running process - it is registry changes).

I don't use CyberSitter and since it is not a malware program/problem, that would be a topic better discussed in the Software Forum or with the creators of the program.
