Hello all. First, I'd like to say that I'm a long time reader, but this is the first time I've had to post for help. Thanks for all the (indirect) help all these years.

Now that I'm done with that, the problem: a boss's Vista computer is acting up. MSE detects Sirefef.R and Sirefef.AH, but the computer always shuts down whenever MSE tries to do anything about it. It also seems to have deleted the Windows Defender service.

Before I had decided to ask for help, I ran Malwarebytes on it in Full Scan, and it found one thing that it attempted to delete, but it showed up again after the restart. I can't attach the log for this, as the required logs per the sticky take up the max 4 uploads, but I can post it later if needed. It references what it found as a '(Rootkit.0Access)'.

I saw a very similar thread to this and attempted to run Combofix to get a log- however, Combofix would create the backup as normal, and then close itself without doing anything else.

I followed the steps listed in the sticky, and attached the logs below. RogueKiller found some stuff, and asked if I wanted to attempt to remove them, but I said no, as the instructions seem only to get a log. Let me know if I should rerun it and let it try to remove. Also, Malwarebyte's Quick Scan does not seem to pick up the file that the Full Scan does.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Rescan with HitmanPro
    • When it finds services.exe - Virus, allow it to Replace by clicking the down arrow next to the detection and choosing Replace.
    • Leave any other detections alone (Ignore them).
    • Afterwards, click the Next button.
    • HitmanPro may want to reboot the PC in order for the changes to take affect, please do so.
    • After reboot and when you are back in Windows, run another scan with HitmanPro and then attach the latest hitmanpro.zip log See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.
Then run RogueKiller and run a scan. After it finishes the scan, select the Files tab and if the below exist, click the Delete button again.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot ( in normal boot mode not safe mode ), and run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new Hitman log
    • the new RogueKiller log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Ok, here are the updated logs, as requested. Looking better already, though the Windows Defender service keeps crashing.

    Thanks again for your help.

Yes and there are more issues with Windows Firewall.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    You're logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you for all the help! Just one last thing...

This is my boss's personal computer he brought in, and apparently the only reason he even noticed it was infected was because Windows Defender would crash on start up. So first thing he did when I gave it back to him was check Windows Defender, and it still won't start up. I've tried opening it through the Start Menu (it says its off, and gives an error message when I attempt to open the dialog to turn it on/off), and I tried manually starting the service under admistrative tools (it starts and then stops, giving a message that some programs stop automatically when not in use).

I've been unsuccessful in getting him to use other protection, so I want to have him have at least Windows Defender. Any advice? Sorry to keep asking for help, but "Tech Support" isn't in my job description, and I can use all the help you can give.

You're welcome. Okay based on this comment about Windows Defender, I went back and looked at your logs focusing on what may impact Windows Defender. I see that the service is stopped as you noted. I also see that you are using Microsoft Security Client but there are a load of left overs from McAfee. Let's see if cleaning all of this up will help.

We will need to download and use MGtools again at the end of this.

But first download and run the below to see if it will dump the rest of McAfee:

    McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Now download ( but dot not do anything else with it yet ) Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows

Now uninstall both of the below if they both appear in Add/Remove Programs ( Do not reinstall until I tell you too. We need to get all security stuff cleaned up before reinstalling ):
    Microsoft Security Client
    Microsoft Security Essentials

Also while uninstalling things, uninstall the below which is out of date:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 << out of date
    Viewpoint Media Player << junk

Now reboot the PC. After reboot do the below.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
