I've followed the malware removal procedures and tried a variety of other tools, but can't get rid of one last file infected with trojan horse bho.anh. I'm helping clean a machine for a college student so I don't know when it started. AVG detects it and thinks it heals it, but it doesn't. I've run all the tools in normal mode and safe mode. Suggesitons would be greatly appreciated. Dan

You need to run this in normal msconfig status.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

Thank you for the advice. I followed the procedure you sent me. I still have the browser hijack. I've attached the logs. Deleting the BHO infected file seems to be impossible...

    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    Run Process Explorer 10.21

    Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    fihkfih.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    fihkfih.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    fihkfih.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now see if you cant get Avenger to delete the file again.

I see you have a Bitdefender log...would you attach that as a txt.

Now tell me exactly what problems you are having.

I launched Process Explorer and looked for those files in every process. I also did a search within Process Explorer. Those dlls didn't show up anywhere. It applied the registry change. I've attached the bitdefender file. I got rid of all the Norton, Housecall, and GSI stuff in the log. The only thing I can't get rid of is the fihkfih.dll and its backup. The symptom is that this shows as an IE Helper in IE and in WinPatrol. AVG alert manager detects it every few minutes and snaps an alter to the screen. I've run AVG many times and it always sees it ut never deletes it. I've also seen some spontaneous reboots and the machine slowing down. Last night, 5 more copies of the virus showed up in one of the many things I ran, but it was able to clean the other 5 (several were in TrendMicro backups). I was wondering in WinPE or BartPE might help. A co-worker suggested I try booting XP from a WinPE CD. I tried to make a CD myself last night, but my copies of XP are pre-SP1, so these tools can't find the files they need. The co-worker that suggested it is making me a copy. I tried killbox too, that couldn't kill the files. They are very resilient. BTW, thank you again for all your help/suggesitons.

And you have removed all of your IE add-ons and toolbars?

What bothers me is that there is no mention of that .dll anywhere other than the scans ...which makes me wonder if it is a false positive. You're tread is the only one on the web with that item. :confused

Try uninstalling IE7 and see if it is still there.

Yes, there are no other IE add-ins or toolbars running. When I restored the machine last Thursday it had IE 6, and it had the problem then. I was actually hoping IE 7 would knock it out. I tried OTMoveIt tonight and that seemed to diable my internet conneciton. Repairing the connection didn't help. I ended up running sfc /scannow and that retsored whaterever OTMoveIt broke.

I think I might try WinPE or BartPE. If that doesn't do it, I'm inclined to image the machine back with thew restore disk. I have the PC owner (I help college students) coming over to tell me what he needs copied off the hard drive).

Are you saying that OTMoveit removed the c:\windows\system32\fihkfih.dll file and then a sfc /scannow restored it?

No, I tried to use OTMoveIt to delete the files. It was unsuccessful, but after I ran it I could not access the internet. I tried repairing the network connection (which was OK), etc. with no luck accessing the internet. I ran sfc /scannow and it restored whatever the prior activity broke.

I did solve the problem tonight. I borrowed a copy on WINPE from work. I booted the machine to the WINPE CD, and then when the background image came up I hit Shift F10. This got me to a command prompt. From there I was able to navigate with DOS commands to the folder and simply delete the two infected files. I've now re-run AVG and BitDefender and the infected files are gone. I also get no more pop-up AVG alerts. I think I'm all set. I want to thank you for all your help.
