    Hi,

I have worked through your post for malware removal, and am attaching combofix, mbam and sas logs below. I will attach the mgtools one in the next post. My computer had been sluggish for a while, but I didn't think much of it til about 2 or 3 months ago when AVG starting popping up with notices everytime I opened a webpage or a windows explorer window. I was warned of trojans lurking in 3 various system32 files, and ran a programs that discovered some malware in registry files.

Since running all your recommended steps the notices from AVG have stopped but my internet browser still takes 20ish seconds to start from time of clicking the icon - so I think there is a possibility that there is still some malware running.

Could you please review the logs and let me know if the problems have been fixed, and if not what I can do to completely clean the system? If there is anything else I need to post please let me know....thank you in advance for any help you can lend, and also for the info in your malware removal post, as it may have cleared the issue but I just wanted to confirm?

    Thanks,

Well, we have some work to do.

If you haven't already, please disable the Guest account in User accounts.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following ( be sure to re-enable when we are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:"
    part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Hi Tim,

Thanks for getting back to me and helping me out with this. Attached are the two new logs you wanted -- since I have done that it does seem that the internet browser is opening a little faster - still a lag but the computer is old (low ram etc) and pretty full of programs that could be causing normal computer related delays! Hopefully these logs can tell you if it is now clean, or what the next steps are that I need to take...

    Thanks again....
    Georgina

Looking much better ( and 1 gig of ram should be sufficient ) .....let's do this:

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file and tell me how things are running.

Hi there, attached is the newest mgtools logs. Computer def isn't as slow as it was at the beginning, so I hope that's good! This might sound like a dumb *** question - but I plugged my ipod in a few weeks ago to charge on the computer, and since then it wont turn off, it just stays on til the battery dies - is there anyway and of the virus/trojans that were on the computer could have affected it? Thanks again for all your efforts on this...

    Sweet....your logs are clean.

As to the ipod, I have absolutely no idea. You should post in software for that. :(

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Tim,

I have worked through to how to protect yourself post, and the last few steps above. The computer is def much faster moving - especially on start up, the computer loads ten times faster. I am so grateful for all of you help, it's so good of you and all your replies were really speedy. And firefox is a way better browser!

I know sometimes volunteer forums such as this have donations section, if you have this I would love to donate something towards your running costs - as it really is great of you all to help us mere mortals with our computing woes! If not, then just know it is extremely appreciated, and with all your steps I'm hoping I should be free and clear of any malware for a while...with regular scanning of course!

    Thanks again Tim,
    Georgina

    You are most welcome!

If you want to donate, you could buy an MG's t-shirt. :)
