    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

    - Now run the steps in the below link and attach the smitfiles.txt log to your next message. You DO NOT need to run Panda again since you ran it above:

SpywareStrike, Smitfraud, SpySheriff, SpyAxe & PSGuard Removal

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

    Questions:

    1) Is your Spy Sweeper version a paid or free version?

    2) Is it up to date with defintions?

    3) Did you save a log? Please attach one.

i have the trial verson and its up to date but i cant find out were the logs are and it cant find it on the program

You need to save the log yourself. See this: Running Spy Sweeper

How long ago did you install Spy Sweeper and where did you download it from? The current trial versions do not fix anything.

you can ignore that last post because the scan was going to take 4 hours

Yes the online scanners do take a very long time to run but the end result is knowing your PC is more secure and clean.

If you download Spy Sweeper from the main download pages of Majorgeeks, it is the trial version that will not fix anything. If you downloaded from the link I gave you in message # 5, this version is an older trial version that still had the ability to fix problems. And it was able to even update definitions for 15 days (at least until recently).

I don't need a HijackThis log until you have complete ALL the steps in the instructions in message # 2.

You don't even have HJT installed properly either. You have it here:
    C:\DOCUME~1\Jerry\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.625\HijackThis.exe

Which means you are running it from the ZIP file using WinRaR. Please follow the directions already given.

ok ill finish it and post the stuff later tonight

  13. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    Okay!

What you have to realize is that HJT does not show everything and just using it to fix things is not going to do a complete cleaning job. Running all the other scans first will help find potentially other hidden problems that HJT does not show, and when they do fix things, they will do a more comprehensive job then just fixing a registry key using HJT. And quite often, HJT will not be able to fix certain shown problems until other stesp are taken first to remove hidden sources of malware.

So while I can see some problems in your log already, and I did not need Avast to tell me that file it finds is a problem, we need to first dig deeper before we move on to special steps that will include HJT to finalize the fixes.

ok ive finished the scan from bitdefender and tryed to do the panada scan but my advast keeps saying that their is a virus on the panada scan when it comes up and closes the connection

just to let you know the virus/worm that advast is detecting is called Win32:CTX

Are you talking about when you run Panda? If so, either diable Avast while running Panda or skip Panda for now. There have been several false positives related to Panda and Avast in the past. It happens because Panda is not encrypting their signatures and Avast finds them and they look like the virus itself.

Please run the below and attach the smitfiles.txt log (skip the requested Panda log at the end of the procedure).

SpywareStrike, Smitfraud, SpySheriff, SpyAxe & PSGuard Removal

Now attach a new HJT log now so we can continue.

Start by downloading two tools we will need:

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of winimq32.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the winimq32.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above for winwef32.dll

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of winimq32.dll and kill it.

Now repeat the above for winwef32.dll

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - <default> - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Taua] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\FNTS~1\notepad.exe" -vt mt
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ivuhoc] C:\Program Files\Common Files\?racle\i?xplore.exe
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'xfire_lsp_9028.dll' missing
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winimq32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winimq32.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winwef32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winwef32.dll

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop.
Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files"
Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Now run Pocket Killbox:
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK.

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note some of the files listed below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\win3.tmp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winimq32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winwef32.dll

If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below with Windows Explorer and delete them (this is a double check! Some may be gone already!):
C:\Program Files\Common Files\FNTS~1\notepad.exe <--- the whole FNTS~1 folder probably needs to go. What is the full name?
C:\Program Files\Common Files\?racle\i?xplore.exe <--- the whole folder probably needs to go. This is not Oracle.
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\win3.tmp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winimq32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winwef32.dll

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You're log is clean but there is a potential problem with your Xfire settings:

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'xfire_lsp_9028.dll' missing

You should check to see if this file is really missing. You may need to reinstall or fix your LSP chain.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!
