i've been experiencing erratic behavior with my system.
i downloaded, installed, and ran AVG free.
it found a trojan in my svchost file.
    i had the file healed.
    still the problems persisted.

i decided then to re format and reinstall my OS.
now, my browser temporarily locks up for about 10 to 15 seconds every once in a while.

    i have a few questions:
will reformatting and reinstalling cure my problems if someone is sending me viruses over the net?
i have a sneaky feeling that is the case. someone infected my machine and now is reinfecting it over the net.

i have zone alarm free installed and i do not turn on my modem until the zone alarm icon quits flashing.

i downloaded SP3 for my os but haven't installed it yet.

    next questions:
what is this svchost file? what does it do?
why is there 3 or 4 instances of this file running on my machine at the same time?

i have XP home service pack 2 on a 3 megabit connection.
    my browser is firefox 2.0.0.3

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

got as far as installing and running superantispyware.
when i tried to update the app it said it didn't have access to the internet.
    i can access the internet (i'm posting aren't i).
anyway i gave the app permission but it said it didn't have it.
do i continue with the unupdated SAS?

i downloaded the manual updates and put them in the requested folder and ran SAS.
now i try spybot and i can't install it because it says it can't acces the server.
my zone alarm flagged me that setup/uninstall was trying to access the trusted zone.
with some apprehension i allowed it access.
the app still will not install.
i'll continue with the readme/ runme first.
    just an update for you.

Your logs are clean...what issues are you still having?

every once in awhile my browser hangs for about 30 to 45 seconds.
i can move the mouse but it won't close the browser nor will the home page (google) load.
the home page not loading is somewhat normal especially after i let the computer sit for awhile without using it. resetting the modems cures that problem.
but my browser hanging is not.

i since installed spybot but still cannot download updates.

i have folding at home and it cannot contact the server.

i have a 3 megabit connection. i've tested my download speed about 7 or 8 times in the last 24 hours. i can't get above about 2 megabits. it usually runs between 2.5 and 3.

    question:
will my zone alarm protect me from reinfection from the web?
if not then what do i need to do?

anyway, this is a great service for free, something for you guys to be proud of.
i wished i was as smart as some of you.

This may be an issue you need to take up with your ISP....and post in the software section for further assistance.

We need to clean up from the scans and then do the final steps which will answer your questions.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you get a success message, then it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significan amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below

      * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    4. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    5. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    9. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

the fixme.reg file could not be merged.

    What error message?

Did you only copy what was inside the quote box and save it as "all files"?
