Hi I have a virus or trojan or both. An scr file was run and now my computer is giving me BAD_POOL_CALLER error. I ran Trend Micros house call and it cleaned up a bunch of files. However I'm still getting the error and I keep getting pop ups telling me that there's outgoing Ip's. Trend Micro said that TCP.25 SMTP is open. This is my work computer any help will be greatly appreciated. I can only run my computer in safe mode, I've tried system restores but windows says it could not complete the restore.

    problems with counter spy

Hi I'm trying to complete the steps from the sticky in this forum, however when I run the scan with counter spy and it completes the scan, I go to the results however it isn't showing anything I've ran it twice and both times nothing was listed, the first time it gave an error message when I hit the results button and quickly crashed, the 2nd time it didn't crash but once again the results were blank, it didn't bring the threats and trojans so I wasn't able to quarentine them, I selected quarantine all, but it said 0 files, etc... please help I've been going at this for a few hours.

    Re: problems with counter spy

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Uninstall CounterSpy and run AVG Antispyware instead. Make sure you fix what it finds. Attach the log fro AVG Antispyware inplace of CounterSpy.

Then continue on with the rest of the READ & RUN ME.

Also please remember to remain in one thread for this current problem with your PC. Thus, attach your logs here when you return.

Hi so I followed the steps. When running Spybot S & D I got the following message
"Some problems couldn't be fixed; the reason could be that the associated files are still in use (in memory).
This could be fixed after a restart.
May Spybot-S&D run on your next system startup?

    4 problems fixed.
1 problems could not be fixed. Please restart your computer!

The one that couldn't be fixed is Smitfraud-C
    Library
    C:\Windows\system32\rpcc.dll

On previous occassions when I let Spybot S&D run after restart it still didn't get rid of it. And one of the others that aparently gets fixed is Torpig but it always returns.

I ran AVG because CounterSpy wasn't working. I ran AVG exactly as suggested however when I went to save report as there was nothing there. It did completely run and I was able to quarantine, etc...

After I ran Panda and restarted my system in Normal mode PC Cillin kept alerting me to all this outgoing that could be potentially harmful, this was non stop and it was SVCHost. something. These attacks were going through TCP 25 SMTP.

I ran Getrunkeys & Show new. I'll attach all the files except AVG or Counter Spy because I couldn't get those.

pleas help as this is my work computer and I can't afford to have it in this shape.

Before I get started on posting a cleanup procedure, I must post the below advisory.

Yes you did have a Torpig infection and Torpig is a password stealing trojan. Because of this I must state the below:

I cannot tell you whether an information has been stolen or not, but your should consider doing the above especially if this PC is used for financial type transactions or if anything that you log into requires security than your everyday type website.

I will work up a fix for what I see on your system and post it in my next message.

Okay let's get started! We have a lot to do!

First Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Now delete the below very large file:
    C:\38.tmp

Now let's run a tool to fix a few problems which include a PurityScan infection.
    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now after running ComboFix, install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Continue by downloading a tool we will need:

    - ProcessExplorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen.
Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    rpcc.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    rpcc.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    rpcc.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {124F1EFF-A639-8DCC-4F11-FB8DCE2487CA} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VMWOEI.DLL
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [funk] funk.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Eprc] "C:\DOCUME~1\CATHRI~1\APPLIC~1\FNTS~1\spoolsv.exe" -vt ndrv
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Oakwp] C:\WINDOWS\F?nts\d?xplore.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinTouch] C:\Documents and Settings\Cathrine Feehely\Application Data\WinTouch\WinTouch.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SfKg6w] C:\Documents and Settings\Cathrine Feehely\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\rayiou.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
    O21 - SSODL: system32 - {D64563BD-EFFC-45C3-9009-8D073D1B67F0} - sysprinters.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Now please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. ComboFix
    2. Avenger
    3. GetRunKey
    4. ShowNew
    5. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Hi I'm doing as you said, I'm at the point where I double clicked winlogon.exe and attempted to go to the treads tab and received the following message

"This version of Dbghelp.dll configured does not support the Microsoft Symbol Server. Please download and install the Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows to get a version that does.

Also I'm getting ahead of myself but when do you want me to run ShowMe & GetRunKey?

By the way thanks so much for your help

    Ok so I proceeded with everything;

When running Process Explorer the rpcc.dll wasn't listed in any of three you told me to look in

The following 2 lines weren't listed in Hijack This

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {124F1EFF-A639-8DCC-4F11-FB8DCE2487CA} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VMWOEI.DLL

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll

I ran Avenger after it rebooted a quick message came up an said something about file not being found and the log file is empty. I'll attach it anyway.

You never renamed HijackThis.exe to analyse.exe as requested in step 7 of the READ ME. You should do this now for possible future use.

Since Avenger did not run properly last time, all things were not deleted and we need to run it again. However we have less to remove.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Hi, once again let me thank you for all your help. It appears as though things are fine, but who knows. Now there's only this Photogallery that keeps trying to install every time I load Windows. I think it's an HP program I guess I'll be asking how to resolve that next.

Anyway I've attached the logs you requested, once you think it's ok for me to do step 8. the system restore disable and re-enable let me know.

That is not an issue for this forum; however, if you don't need it or don't use it, uninstall it. That rule applies to anything you have installed and don't need.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
