Trojan removal problem

I have a Gateway Essential Intel Celeron processor with Windows 98 2ed, 127 MB memory. I have 4.26 GB of Used Space and 10.0 GM of Free Space.

I update and run McAfee antivirus scan and AdAware every Saturday. I download nothing and do not open any attachments. I also have McAfee Fire Wall.

While clicking on an AOL Seach link, McAfee notified me that it detected a trojan. I clicked on the Delete option and received a notice that it could not be deleted. I clicked on the Quarantine option and received a notice that it could not be quarantined.
I ran a full McAfee scan with no results. I ran a Stinger scan with no results. I then purchased PC Tools Spyware Doctor and ran that scan with no results.
    I have since tried free:
    A Squared scan
    AVG
Defensa -- all with no results.

Also, when trying a ScanDisk in Safe Mode I received this notice:
"ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable ScanDisk to finish sooner. Do you want to continue receiving this warning?"
Ctrl/Alt/Delete revealed that ScanDisk and Explorer were running in the background.

I am also having problems with Explorer - recieving Fatal Exception messages and not being able to sign on using Explorer with my DSL.

I know there is a trojan because the screen melts down (disapears) slowly from the top down and changing screens results in fractured pieces and hang ups.

Please tell me what I can do to remove this trojan. Thank you.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I am a little confused by your statment:

Could you explain in a little more detail what you mean by 'changing screens results in fractured pieces and hang ups.'

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat[/B]
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
