Firstly, Happy New Year, but secondly I need some help to remove this infection please. I noticed it on 5 December and I have been trying to get rid of it since then. It seems to be stored at c:\windows\system32\ddccy.dll. I was using Avira antivir which detected it and blocked the pop-ups but couldn't clear it. I've completed your procedures of read & run me first. I removed Avira and installed AVG as you said but neither it nor Spybot pick up the infection when scanning and AVG doesn't block the pop-ups either. I'll attach the 3 reports at the end and hope you'll be able to help.
    Thanks, Dave.

    Hi Greybeard!
Something blocked your AVG Antispyware scan. You may have to unplug your computer (physically) from the internet and disable your antivirus while you run it. First please do the following:

    1) Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the below:

    - Java(TM) 6 Update 2"
    - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    2) Reboot after uninstalling the above.

    3) Install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    4) Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2442B6AC-9441-413C-B276-A0533F8554E0} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E317B978-55BD-46BC-B6D4-0FFF8E73CBBD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O16 - DPF: {33331111-1131-1111-1111-611111193428} -
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnoolm - pmnoolm.dll (file missing)

After you click fix, just close hijackthis.

    5) If you do not use Windows Messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger!!) I would like you to run Disable/Remove Windows Messenger

    6) Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    7) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    8) Please run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and attach the fresh MGlogs.zip it generates along with the Avenger log.

Let me know how things are running now?

    Hi Abri,
Thanks so much for all your time and advice. I've run everything as you set out (perfect for me to follow) and I think that it has solved the problem as I've just tried opening several explorer windows at once and I got no pop-ups at all. WONDERFUL! Also everything is working at the quicker speeds I'm used to - what a relief. I cannot thank you enough and I really appreciate what you and Major geeks do.
I'll attach the files as you asked.
    Again, many thanks,
    Dave

    Hi greybeard dave!
    We're getting close.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {79638F39-3DE2-43B5-B576-4BA01DC8AF1D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll (file missing)

After you click fix, just close hijackthis.

    Run CCleaner and Reboot

Then Please run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and attach the fresh MGlogs.zip

I only need to see the last logs to check if this one entry is gone from HijackThis. You can also check it yourself if you want by opening the zip file and double-clicking on the hijackthis log. Look at the 02 entries and see if that one is not there. If it's not, then you can continue with our final cleaning instructions.

It appears to me that you're running without any antivirus? At the end of the instructions below, you'll see a link on How to protect yourself from Malware in which we give our recommendations for effective, lightweight and free antivirus programs. Also, you'll be setting a new clean restore point.

    Hi Abri,
Thanks for being so thorough - I was ready to carry on regardless and had already toggled the system restore because I was so sure.
I've now followed your instructions again and will attach the file as you asked - I will try to check but please confirm if it is all clear now then I'll carry on with the rest of your instructions.
I uninstalled my anti-virus ( Avira) when I followed the tutorial of "Read me and run me first" so I may have got that wrong! I will re-install that as it was the one that showed up the problem in the first place.
    Thanks again,
    Dave

    Hi Greybeard Dave!

Sorry, I got behind here. Your logs are clean. If your antivirus program is not yet installed, you need that very definitely. Our recommendations for a set of good free programs that work well together can be found at the end of the instructions in post #5. Take time to read through that.

I have a question of my own. Your Windows directory shows the Windows update uninstalls at the end of the directory rather than closer to being at the beginning of the directory (in the newfiles.txt log in MGlogs.zip). Is that something you did yourself or do you know how that happened? (just curious)

    hi abri
Sorry about the huge delay but I had hardware problems afterwards - my power supply failed and had to be replaced.
I just want to thank you again for your help. I really do appreciate what you have done for me.
As for your last message about the windows update location, I certainly didn't do it myself as I don't even understand the question! I am very much just a computer user and don't know much about how things work and leave anything I don't understand alone.
    Thanks again
