Greetings and thank you for an awesome site!

Here is the history of my problem. One week ago, whenever booting up or opening a program, I began getting "error" messages stating "The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\pukanera.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against the installation diskette." Then on 10/29/09 my Symantec AV detected a Trojan vundo virus; it identified a file in my Windows System32 folder named "yeyozilu.dll" as the infected file. Symantec cleaned and repaired the the file, but this didn't work. I used the Vundo removal tool and the Symantec manual instructions (also didn't work). I also tried renaming the "yeyozilu.dll" file with a different extension, but this didn't work, either.

Since coming across your site, I've performed the Basic Computer maintenance and housekeeping instructions and then followed the instructions in "Read and Run Me First." All of the scanning and cleaning programs worked without any problems. However, Root Repeal did give me a message that said it found 2 hidden, locked files.

The error messages are now gone, and my computer seems to be working fine, but I know that there can be traces of the vundo virus left behind, and I wanted to make sure everything is clean (my dissertation is riding on this). Also, when I did a basic Windows search of my C-drive, it says that there is a "pukanera.dll.vir" file that is quaratined in C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32, which I found concerning.

Would it be possible for someone to take a look at my log files to make sure everything looks okay? Thank you very much.

Having items in your quarantine folder is exactly where they should be.

Please use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nisabadu
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yeyozilu.rar

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working!

Thank you so much for your quick response!

I've now deleted those two files and have attached the MGTools log from the last scan. As far as I can tell, everything seems to be running well, and I haven't had any more of the "error" messages.

I would like to express how much I appreciate your help and the tools you've provided. Just a matter of days ago, I was really at a loss as to how to solve this, and I don't know what I would have done without your assistance and resources. You guys are awesome!

You are most welcome. Let's do our final clean up as your logs are clean.

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
