My sons computer is infected with this trojan (he has gone to a rock festival leaving me a message to 'sort it out please'!). It allows you to start up but shuts down within a few minutes. He has a hp laptop running windows 7 home premium (I am not familiar with this sytem).

I have taken a look at other posts on this topic and tried to start the suggested process running FRST64.exe. However in the command prompt it tells me that 'the subsystem needed to support the image type is not present' or 'is not recognisable as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I have not been able therefore to attach a log.

I understand that fixing this is probably specific to each computer, so have not attempted to do anything else suggested in other posts. I am stuck completely and would very much appreciate some help and suggestions.

    thanks in advance

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Since you cannot do this (which would be the easiest way to get started and bypass the 1 minute shutdown), you will have to try to complete as much of the below as possible. Even if you have to do it in safe boot mode.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

    Thanks for answering so promptly.
Unfortunately the latop shuts down within a couple of minutes even in safe mode, so I am unable to follow these instructions.
However, I tried the FRST diagnostics again (using a different memory stick) and this time it worked. As the trojan is listed as win64 I assumed I should run the FRST64 version. Results are attached. Hope this is useful.

Okay, now that you go FRST to run I can see the form or ZeroAccess infection that you have and we need to replace an infected system file. In order to do this, I need to find a backup copy on your PC. I will need you to run the below to help me find this backup. Once we have this info, we can create a fix.

Boot to System Recovery Options and run FRST again.
Type the below bolded text in the edit box after "Search:".

    services.exe

    Then click the Search button.

It will make a log (Search.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See How to attach)

    You're welcome.

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot into normal Windows can continue with the below.

Now from normal Windows, run MGtools per the below instructions and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file.

    Using MGtools

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the further instructions.

I have followed the first part of the instructions and attach the fixlog.txt. On trying to install MGtools the laptop tells me that I need admin priviliges for this, and did I want to install it elsewhere. Not sure how to tackle this I'm afraid. The laptop has not crashed as it was doing, so I guess that is progress, though it appears a little slow! Grateful for advice. What does the MGtools program do?

    thanks

Just save it anywhere, and then transfer iit to C:\ yourself. ;) MGTools is an information collector. Helps us target all traces of malware.

Having admin priviledges has nothing to do with where you save it. It just needs as administrator as stated if running Windows Vista or Win 7. You can save it anywhere on the drive the Windows loads from but we prefer either the root folder ( C:\MGtools.exe ) or the Desktop folder so that our final cleanup steps can find it and remove it when we are ready.

Once you attach this log we can continue.

Is your PC still working OK?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - been away a couple of days.

Yes the laptop is working fine - my son tells me that it is acting normally - neither slower or faster.

I ran MGtools and attach the zip file. Many thanks again for your help.

I guess you and your son did not notice that Windows FIrewall and a few other services were broken.

Download the below file and save it to your Desktop

    BITS.reg

Then right click on it and select Merge. If prompted, allow it to be added to your registry.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks again for the help. I have done all the above and attach the log file. I have not tested the laptop fully but seems OK (though I thought all was OK last time, so not sure how I tell if all is really OK other than through your diagnostics!).

    You're welcome.

That looks much better. All the services I noticed that were broken are now fix. See how things work for a day or so and then if all is good, complete the below final instructions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much for your help. I have followed all the steps you recommended and all seems to be running fine now. One happy son again!
