A few days ago (Friday, I think) I started getting red and white pop warning messages telling me I have wml.exe/abebot and trojandownloader.xs (not at the same time.) I also get a yellow triangular warning icon indicating I have security issues. If I click on any of these warnings I get directed to a page to buy anti-spyware (antispyware-reviews.biz).

I have read that others have had this problem and some were able to resolve the problems with cleanup and some not.

I have followed the steps suggested in the Windows VISTA cleanup procedures, and while it has removed some spyware, the problem still exists.

I have attached the requested logs.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please first disable Spybot's Teatimer as was requested in the READ ME. See: How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [szpsasmp] C:\ProgramData\szpsasmp\upiduriv.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [8X4Qhm2xaE] C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [8X4Qhm2xaE] C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\Windows\Temp
    C:\Users\FnaInc\AppData\Local\Temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

While waiting for help, I installed and ran AVG anti-virus (free version). It found and removed the following -
    Trojan Horse Downloader.Obfuskated C:\ProgramData\szpsasmp\upiduriv.exe
    Trojan Horse SHeur.BCBT C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe.

The pop ups and warning icon/msgs went away. The only residual I could find was upon startup a Windows icon showed up in the task bar stating "Windows has blocked some startup programs that require permission to run at startup. Click here to view blocked programs" I clicked the icon and was presented with a choice of "Show or remove blocked programs" or "Run blocked programs". I first chose to view blocked pgms, this brought up a list of pgms and all were valid pgms and permitted. I then chose run blocked pgms and this brought up the System Configuration Utility. I went to startup and all pgms were checked except the following -
    . 8X4Qhm2xaE C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    . SZPSASMP C:\ProgramData\szpsasmp\upiduriv.exe HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
    I left them unchecked.
I searched my computer but could not find any reference to them.
I also noticed that under the general tab my startup options are -
    Selective Startup
    . Load Systm Services
    . Load Startup Items
not Normal Startup as I would expect it to be.

I received your post and followed the instructions as best I could considering most of the stuff had already been removed.

I still have the windows blocked programs msg upon startup and would appreciate any advice you have as to how to get rid of it.

    Requested logs are attached.
I hope all this info makes sense.
    Thanks for your help.

Did you uninstall Symantec before installing AVG? If not, you are voliating one of the first important messages given in the READ ME. You must only have one antivirus installed. If you have both installed then you must uninstall one of them immediately before continuing.

You did not attach any logs. Also note that if you do not have MSconfig in normal startup mode as requested in step 1 of the READ ME, then do not attach the MGlogs.zip file. First put your system into normal startup mode and then get a new log and attach it. Make sure you remember to attach the Avenger log that you already have.

    I installed/ran/uninstalled AVG.
Symantic is currently the only anti-virus software installed and running.
System is in normal startup mode.

    I ran analyze.exe with these 2 items checked -
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [szpsasmp] C:\ProgramData\szpsasmp\upiduriv.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [8X4Qhm2xaE] C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe

I ran Avenger with this input -
    Files to delete:
    C:\ProgramData\szpsasmp\upiduriv.exe
    C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe
    C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh\mxojonsp.exe
    Folders to delete:
    C:\ProgramData\edojwbeh
    C:\ProgramData\szpsasmp

    I ran Getlogs.bat

    Attached are files -
    MGlogs.zip
    Avenger.txt

I restarted and all appears ok.

    Thanks for your help.

The MGlogs.zip file you attached is incomplete. Are you sure that you allowed it to finish running? Also make sure when you run GetLogs.bat this time instead of double clicking on it, right click and select Run As Administrator. Then attach a new log so we can be sure we got everything removed.

I ran it as admin - hope the results are better this time.

    You're logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    2. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    3. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Everything seems fine at this point.
