Trojans and general badness

I have an old laptop which used to be pretty ok. But for a while I started getting a lot of notices in AVG. Trojans generally. And things went to heck in the past while. And I haven't felt capable to deconstruct whatever is happening till now the holidays.

One of AVGs notices for example:
AVG resident shield is advising me "Virus Detected"... While openning file C:\Winnt\eg_auth_1041.dll
Trojan Horse P2e.CC

I couldn't convince AVG to handle the problem. I turned to other tools. But so far the standard support steps haven't lead to a way to handle issues.

I'm lucky that I seem to be able to type on this machine and it is responding ok at the moment. But it isn't likely to last in this state.

• Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:
