Hi I seem to have the Trojon Vundo virus on my computer and I can't remove it. I have Norton AntiVirus 2005 and it detected it but couldn't remove it. I went through all of the steps of removing viruses and spyware that you guys suggested and it removed some things but when I restarted my computer the Norton antivirus pop-up keeps telling me that I still have it. The path is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqq.dll. When I ran the Norton antivirus program it said that it has affected 45 files on my computer, I don't know if that’s relevant or not but I thought that I'd share that just in case it might be important. I also downloaded the removal tool from the syematic web site but that didn't remove it either. Also, when I was running the spyware downloads the Microsoft Antispyware couldn't run in safe mode. I have attached the "Hijack this" log file. Can you please help me to remove it.

There is a Special Removal Procedures link in step 6 of the READ & RUN ME that contains another link to a Virtumonde cleaning procedure. You can either run that. Or you can try the below which has had good success lately.

    Running Spy Sweeper...

Make sure you attach the Spy Sweeper log when finished and also attach a new HJT log too.
It will take quite awhile for the Spy Sweeper scan to run. It is very intensive and should resolve your Virtumonde problems.

You also should stop using msconfig to control startups. This is covered in the HijackThis installation guide given in step 7 of the READ & RUN ME.

I downloaded the spy sweeper and the first time I ran it it froze during the removal process so I had to restart my computer, and after it restarted I noticed that the Norton antivirus virus indicator pop-up didn't show up. I ran the spy sweeper again because it didn't finish removing problems on my computer and that time it completed everything. The log that I'm attaching has both summary logs on it. And I did change my startup controls to the normal settings. So I'm guessing that the virus has been removed, so is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening again?

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqq.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: sstqq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqq.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtutt - vtutt.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
    C:\Program Files\MyWaySA <--- the whole folder

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now while still in safe mode I want you to make sure you exit ALL programs that are running (especially any browsers). You are running out of memory when you ran Spy Sweeper before. So now with all programs exited, run a new Spy Sweeper scan now from safe mode.

Now reboot in normal mode and attach a new HJT log and also the new Spy Sweeper log. And tell us how things are working.

I ran the spy sweeper and the "hijack this" and my computer seems to be doing fine. Its running a tad bit slower than it did before the virus but I guess thats from not having enough memory, besides that everything seems to be okay.

Your log is clean! If you want to help speed things up, consider not running a bunch of unnecessary items at startup. None of the below are necessary:

    C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe
    C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
    C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe
    C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe
    C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

Thank you so much for helping me remove the virus, but now when I insert a CD into my CD-ROM drive my computer doesn't even recognize that there is a disc in that drive. I'm thinking that during the process of removing the virus, somehow the CD-ROM read and write drive got deleted. I have a disc that came with my computer that could reinstall drivers but since my drive doesn't recognize any disc is there anyway that I can reinstall the drive? I have Microsoft Windows XP so do I need to go to the Microsoft web site and download it or do I go to the Dell web site because I have a Dell computer?

Typcially CD drives do not require any drivers in WinXP. The system automatically recognizes them at startup and adds the hardware. If you disable (or if malware some how disabled) the IDE interface so that it is not enabled, no hardware will be recognized. Do you see the drive in Device Manager? Is it recognized properly? If not check you BIOS settings to make sure that the Secondary (I assume it is on the secondary) IDE interface is enable for CD ROM support.

The driver is recognized; I found the problem by going in the device manager. It says that the problem is that the configuration information in the registry is incomplete or damaged (code 19). so does this mean that its not repairable?
