    Hi,

I am attempting to reconnect my wife's HP P4 with my Dell 8100 P4. They were connected prior to our move. Now the darn Home Networking Wizard is not working so friendly. I keep receiving the response the the "Network Path Can Not Be Found" and that I may not have permission to view the selected folders, files, etc.. I have verified the names of the PC's they are correct. I can even see shared folders on my pc but I can NOT open them. I have not had this problem before. We have a highspeed cable connection and a D-Ling "DI 604" resedential Gateway router. It has all been rather easy in the past so I am vexed as to why it is difficult now.

I was hoping to back-up my files & folders on my Wife's PC so I could setup my Imac and then transer the music, pics, and some Word documents back over but things are not working so smoothly right now.

Any advice or direction is grately appreciated from you fine folks. I was hoping not to have to buy some software to do this - if at all possible as the IMAC set me back enough... if you can dig?

Thank you again and in advance - Major Geeks has been my BEST resource for direction and advice.

    Left Click on Start
    Left Click on Run
    Type CMD, press Enter
Type netsh winsock reset, press enter. Do this on both machines.
    Reboot the computer

    If that doesn’t work:

    1. Sit at your wife’s PC
    2. Left Click on Start
    3. Left Click on My Computer
    4. Find the folders that you want shared
    5. Right Click on each folder and then Left Click on Properties. Follow these steps for each folder you want shared:

    6. Left Click on the “Sharing” tab
    7. Left Click on the radio button “Share this folder”
    8. Left Click on “Permissions”
    9. Left Click on “Full Control”
    10. Click OK
    11. Left Click on the “Security” tab
    12. Left Click on the name of the user account that you log into windows with
    13. Verify that the username has “Full Control” permission. If they don’t, that account may have “Special Permissions” (the last entry on the list of permissions). If that is checked, left click on “Advanced”. Then highlight your username account again from the list, and click on “Edit”. Verify that you have full control permissions.

If your user account isn’t listed, then I can guide you through how to add a user to the NTFS permissions.

Here is some extra information, which may help you avoid further headaches:

There are two layers of permissions on more current windows machines: NTFS and share-level. Either one of them may be disallowing you permission to access the files.

Share-level permissions are only applied for remote users attempting to access the shared folder on the network. Only NTFS permissions are applied if you are sitting at the local machine that has the resources you want to access. Since you are trying to access the shared resource remotely, you have to double check the state of the permissions at both the share-level and NTFS. The most restrictive of both permissions combined are your effective permissions.

When looking at the properties for a folder, the two relevant tabs are ‘Sharing’ and ‘Security’. Sharing tab = share-level permissions. Security tab = NTFS permissions.

The response I received after typing " netsh winsock reset" was the following -

"The following comand was not found: winsock reset."

I have also givien permissions to all of the folders on my PC that I wish to save over to hers until I can get my IMAC setup. Conversantly, I have builtin a shared folder on her pc for me to store things in as well. Yet I am still unable to access it.

You didn't give out any information about your computer, so I gave you the command which works for windows xp sp2. I didn't notice that you posted the same thread in another forum.

Next time, please follow the stickied thread when asking for help. I didn't realize someone else already gave you the solution, which you also didn't mention trying in this thread. Some people on here don't mind helping, but it is annoying to waste time helping people when they already got similar help from someone else previously.

"X" I do understand. Sorry for the confusion on my part and/or causing any for you too. My mistake.

I have tried both the advice that you offered as well as the advice that Matacumbie offered. It has not seemed to help.

I did download and run the "winsockxpfix" program as recommended by Matacumbie after all other action that were recomended had failed. It seems to have made some changes in the responses I receive from the networking wizard in xp and in "My Network Places" when trying to connect. The response I now receive when trying to add a network place is "Windows requires a share to publish to. Please try another location." I have several folders set to share and even tried creating a new one incase that might work - it did'nt.

When viewing "Entire Network" within My Network Places: I am able to get to "Microsoft Windows Network", then to "MSHOME" (our default workgroup on the network). I can even see my wife's PC's however, I am unable to connect to any of the shared folders. When I select MSHOME and double click the PC hangs a bit and then I see her PC but if I double click her pc I receive a splash box stating: "\\insert wife's pc name here - is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the adminsitrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

Just for the record - I have granted permission for each pc to share and view with the other - as I have done in the past without incident. We are both running Windows XP Pro., and connect to the Internet through a "D-Link, DI 604" Residential Gateway. We both have Pentium 4's.

I hope this is enough information for anyone. Please advise. If more is required.

Thank you again for your time and consideration in this matter.

    Best regards,

    DigitalSwag

    *** I am very appreciative. *** Thank you :)

What Anti-virus/Firewall do you have intsalled?

I have "AntiVir Personal Edition Classic" installed - the free version is a recomended Antivirus from Major Geeks.

For a firewall I installed the free version of ZoneAlarms - however, I have a practice of shutting it down just recently because it has begun to block my Mozzilla browser for reasons that I have not been able to determine. Mozzilla has permission to access the Internet in ZoneAlarms so - I was lost on that issue. The firewall is shut down regularly for the past couple weeks, as is the XP firewall. Both my wife's and my PC have the windows XP firewall disabled. She uses the same Antivir that I do.

Both have had all the recent updates on both PC's.

I hope this is what you need to know.

Both of those should be OK. My thinking was NIS (Norton Internet Security) might be blocking it.

I am a bit confused about that.

I used to run Norton SystemWorks2003 and the AntiVir. When the subcription expired I dumped it all due to them seeming very top heavy for windows; seemed to slow everything down... and they are not cheap either. However, I didn't seem to have any issues with the uninstall. So - how could Norton effect my connection at this point? I don't understand. Sorry for the trouble.

    Thank you again.

It really depends on how long it's been. If it was right before your move, could be worth checking. The Symantec products are hard to remove and cause problems down the road. The Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) listed below will remove any left-over files from SystemWorks.

I'm just guessing at things here, might not be the issue but I would run the tool just to see. If you want to wait I'm sure you will get some other ideas/suggestions.

    Thank you "M".

It's been months since I removed All my Norton products. I doubt I'll every use them again.

All I am really hoping to do is backup my 17Gigs of music and another 12Gigs on Pics & word docs so - I can migrate to my IMAC. I think I am simply going to make my HD a slave in my wifes PC and then just setup my Apple. I am thinking that might be a good side step to this headache. Perhaps then I can network my IMAC with her pc. I hope.

Thank you so much for your advice - truly you have been help.

Just thought you all might like to know the work around I used for this issue.

I was able to see the root directory of my PC on my IMac. However, I could not view any folders that were not directly under the "C" drive. If I double click the "My Documents" folder it would show as being empty. So - I copied the "My Documents" folder directly to "C". This action allowed me to see all files in the "My Documents" folder and thus enabled me to copy all of my important documents, pics, etc., over to my IMac.

I'm not certain why I could not view anything not directly under the root drive in my PC but - hey problem solved.

Thank you all for your help.

    :)

I was having the same exact problem and I finally found the fix for myself :D

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318030
(This is what's found at the above URL)
Method 1: Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and start the Computer Browser service
To resolve this issue, make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is turned on and that the Computer Browser service is running on each computer in the workgroup. To do this, follow these steps.
Step 1: Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet Connections.
    2. Click Network Connections.
    3. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
    4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
    5. Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
    6. Click the WINS tab.
    7. Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK two times.
    8. Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
    9. Close the Network Connections window.
Step 2: Start the Computer Browser service
    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
    2. Double-click Services and Applications.
    3. Double-click Services.
    4. On the right side, right-click Computer Browser, and then click Start.
    5. Close the Computer Management window.

On step two, my stuff was already started so instead I just clicked the "Restart" shingy. Right after i did that my network got all connected again n stuff.
