    As the title states. When in the middle of installing AVG antivirus i get an error saying to remove McAfee VirusScan as it will cause a conflict ( or words to that affect) The trouble is that i deleted that program about 6 months ago.
    I was wondering if there could be some of this program left behind and how would i go about finding it if there is .
    I'm running Windows Xp Pro Service pack 3
    Thanks in advance Dave

    Looks like you won't be getting that bottle of scotch . I have tried a couple of times to install the AVG antivirus and when it finishes doing its thing it tells me there is an error saying that the anti virus has failed to activate .
    Do you have any ideas ? thanks again, Dave C

    Ouch, I've installed AVG on dozens of 'puters, never had this problem.

    Are you sure you are malware free?

    Try running the AVG removal tool;
    http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

    Then, after a reboot, install AVG but, when prompted, choose the "custom" install. Then, you will be given a decision tree. I uncheck all the boxes except for the top one for just the antivirus portion. The new AVG security suite is rather bloated and not that effective. So you uncheck multi-language, site scanner/advisor, email scanner, and I believe an option for MS Word documents, (been about a week since I did one, not certain as to the exact choices).

    Anyway, when I install Only the top box is checked. Never had a problem with this approach.

    Also, when installing, all other security software is turned off? Including Windows Defender? Check your security center in the control panel to confirm this. Make sure no other antivirus or anti spyware is running in the background. I use Winpatrol to monitor this; http://majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html

    Great little program to monitor/control startup programs and finding those running hidden in the background. Look for any references to not only McaFee but any other security programs.

    If this again fails, I would suggest a run through of the malware removal steps from http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

    A lot of malware is good at disabling/blocking antivirus programs

    Check your firewall that AVG has permission to get out and be sure you are connected to the internet so AVG can get out to activate.
    Activating is not the same thing as not being installed.
    You probably have AVG listed in your program listing.
    Check the box to activate it.

    OK , i have done all of the above and still keep getting this error.

    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
    Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
    Access is denied.

    Very odd, never had this.

    Did you run the malware removal steps? Those programs are very good at detecting and removing malware and its remnants. And post your logs there for inspection.

    Also, first set a restore point, then run dialafix;
    http://majorgeeks.com/Dial-a-fix_d4899.html

    This can repair problems with registrations and permissions. But sometimes it creates its own problems, never happened to me but I have seen it reported, hence the restore point.

    From here Use Reset_Access ulility. As Brandy said disconnect from the net and shut down all security apps. Also what AV did you install after McAfee? You mentioned you removed it six months ago..

    Cheers
