    hi,

i'm converting my laptop from vista to xp and i'm having trouble getting the drivers for video, sound etc..

my laptop is a compaq presario f504eu mobo: Quanta 30d3 - compaq's website gives me a small list of drivers but none for sound and video

    - i've also downloaded nvidia drivers but when i scroll a page it's all slowly refreshing so doesn't seem to have worked??

    Istill have no sound...

    - does anyone know where i can get a complete list of drivers?

    Thanks in Advance
    Andy

I now have sound and wireless assistant but in device manager i have 2 yellow "?!" next to "video controller (vga compatible)" and "unknown device"

so it looks like i still need a video driver - there's nothing on compaq's website after i put in my product number etc - there is a bios update driver which when i install says this bios is not for this mobo?? umm - can't contact compaq because the laptop is out of warrentee - unless i pay £15 (lovely company) - I only want to contact them to locate the appropiate driver how sad are these people.?

Anyone know where i can get the video driver?

    Hi

Install this which is the Chipset driver from HERE, will install many devices drivers from Chipset, VGA to Network, reboot when installed

Sadly as that model was more designed for Vista, it only as you already know on the support sites lists limited drivers, mainly as Compaq or HP wont support downgrading, so even paying the £15 your not likely to get the list of drivers. Companies and tech moves forward and older versions of hardware and drivers will become scarce, it can be tough not to find XP drivers for PCs built for Win7 and will get harder when Win8 is released, its not the companies like HP/Compaq at fault but the hardware makers who make the components, they dont spend time writing drivers for old windows versions.

Then see whats missing in Device Manager (yellow ! marks)

thank you halo - got the video display up and running, no more dragging windows etc.

in device manager i have a yellow exclamation mark next to "nvidia nforce networking controller #2" and still a "?!" next to "unknown device"

    - what should i do about these, any thoughts?

if anyones converting a f500 presario machine from vista to xp all the drivers are here http://www.laptopdrivers.net/compaq-presario-f500-laptop-download-vista-to-windows-xp-drivers/ with a list of compatible models etc.

    Cheers

    Hi

Good on the video, thats a start.

Check in did you also install all of the drivers, mainly the Synaptics and the Quick Launch Buttons drivers located at that site you posted? as the unknown device is likely to be one of the added hardware devices, quicklaunch buttons is a possible, fax modem is the other I can think of, but open Device Manager up and double click that unknown device and click Details tab and under property from the dropdown choose Hardware ID and paste the list in your next post.

As for the networking controller #2 try this is right click and uninstall it, then reboot.

    Hi

OK got rid of the errors with "unknown device" ;)

One yellow ! still remains beside the networking controller #2, I tried as you said and uninstalled it in device manager and reboot, just reappears.

could it be the hp wireless assistant? that didn't work when vista was installed and it still doesn't work now w/ xp (but that's another post) - I did install the driver for the hp wireless assistant and it worked briefly then i had to revert back to the usb dongle to get a connection, so god knows.

In device manager it says "this device is not starting - code 10"

I'll check the hardware id and post back in a mo.

    Hi

Was that ID from the exact location I posted? just curious as it should look something like this

    http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6297/19812738.jpg

just need the top code PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_4364&SUBSYS_81F81043&REV_12

As this is the secondary ethernet port, and unless you need to use two eithernet ports, I wouldnt get too hung up on a missing driver, its quite possible that this is normal as you have gone from a supported OS to a non supported one.

    Hi again

I'm trying to get this working as the hp wireless assistant might work with this driver in place, if my line of thinking is right. This way i won't need the dongle to connect to the internet.
