Trouble shooting help needed.

I have an older socket A box that is just a folder running Fedora Core (5)? I check on it about every week or so. Today, it was running, but no display. I restarted it, saw the Fedora splash screen and walked away. Came back no display, so I restarted it and saw multiple errors on the boot up. I had a lot of errors like unable to make a temp file, cannot read inode... It wants to run ckdisk (sp) but other than entering the root password, I don't know what do type in.

I suspect a dead hard drive. Should I try a repair (and if so, how? Trying to learn the CLI), format the drive and reinstsall (sometimes works on other computers), or swap out the drive and start over? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

i agree it sounds like the hard drive, but other then replacing it, im not sure what you can do to repair it. Might try leaving your machine running with out running folding, my one webserver decided it doesn't like folding and doesn't stay on when running folding.

 

No point in it running if it is not folding! I think I need the Linux command for ckdisk? I wants me to do that, I type in my root password, and then I just get a cursor, and don't know what to type. Curse words don't seem to help it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsck is the command your looking for. Oh and the suggestion to leave it running without folding was a testing mech.

 

fsck. Thanks for the info. I tried it, no luck. I have an old Quantom Fireball hard drive, and guess what wan on it... Evidently in the past I put Linux on this machine with this drive, it is back up and running! Folding has some issues, last core was from January, will work on that.
